Last Exorcism Number 1, Piranha 3D Sinks

It was a photofinish, but The Last Exorcism edged out Takers for the number one spot at this weekend’s box office. Exorcism scared up enough teens to earn $21.3 million, while Takers raked in an estimated $21 million. This is producer Eli Roth’s first hit since Hostel bagged $19.5 million in 2006. Exorcism did better than 2009s The Unborn, but did not recreate the success of The Exorcism of Emily Rose which opened with $30.1 million in 2005.

Even after good reviews from both fans and critics, Piranha 3D still sank with a 57 percent drop, pulling in an estimated $4.3 million for its second weekend.

Hot Babe of the Week: Odette Yustman

The only good thing about Platinum Dunes’ The Unborn was the poster featuring Odette Yustman’s ass in white panties. Yustman recently starred in the music video for Weezer’s If You’re Wondering If I Want You To, and she is currently in Esquire Mexico’s September issue.

You can catch Yustman in the upcoming films Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, the comedy Group Sex and the thriller The Double with Richard Gere. She also appeared in 2008’s creature feature Cloverfield.

Top Grossing Horror Films of 2009

With 2010 right around the corner it is time to wrap up all of our year end coverage and start preparing for another great year. Below is the top ten grossing horror films of 2009. Of course the biggest success story was Paranormal Activity and the biggest failures were Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 and perhaps Saw VI. I left New Moon off the list because it isn’t a horror film, but I did post its number in case you would like to see the insane spending power of teenage girls and overweight middle-aged housewives.

Also be sure to check out our other end of the year features like; HYB’s Top Ten Horror Movies of 2009, Hottest Horror Babe of 2009 and the Best Horror Bitch of the Year.

Ghost Rider 2 Will Be Gay No Matter What the Rating!

Lets face it Ghost Rider 2 is about as exciting as a Fantastic Four 3. Nobody wants to see either made, and today David Goyer (The Unborn I’m not letting him live that crap down!) told Collider.com he is just going to be lazy and dust off an old 9-year-old script. Great thinking! Why put effort into something no one wants?

In an interview Goyer told Steve Weintraub that Ghost Rider 2 will be based off a 9-year-old script that was originally planned to be a R-rated film, but the studio wants it to be PG-13 so he will be “toning things down.” You can watch the interview below.

Three Orphan TV Spots

Has there been a decent creepy kid movie in the last five years? All my alcohol soaked brain can remember is that Dakota Fanning piece of doo doo Hide and Seek. Well hopefully Isabelle Fuhrman’s (who worked with Fanning on Hounddog) creepy kid, Esther, won’t be as big as a disappointment as Fanning’s not-so-creepy kid, Emily Callaway.

Esther is the evil 9-year-old bitch who is adopted by the Coleman family in the, Orphan, in theaters July 24, 2009. Below are three TV spots and two trailers for the film.

Official Synopsis:

The tragic loss of their unborn child has devastated Kate and John, taking a toll on both their marriage and Kate’s fragile psyche as she is plagued by nightmares and haunted by demons from her past. Struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives, the couple decides to adopt another child. At the local orphanage, both John and Kate find themselves strangely drawn to a young girl named Esther. Almost as soon as they welcome Esther into their home, however, an alarming series of events begins to unfold, leading Kate to believe that there’s something wrong with Esther—this seemingly angelic little girl is not what she appears to be. Concerned for the safety of her family, Kate tries to get John and others to see past Esther’s sweet facade. But her warnings go unheeded until it may be too late…for everyone

Top 100 Movies of 2009

Below is a list of the Top 100 movies by total domestic gross for 2009. Not one horror film cracked the top ten or even the top 20 (unless you want to count Beyonce’s Obsessed), but keep in mind, films like Land of the Lost (#32) cost $100 million to make. The highest grossing horror film, Friday the 13th cost around $19 million to make, that is a HUGE difference. Just because none of this year’s horror films are in the top 25 doesn’t mean they performed badly. It just means films like Star Trek ($150 million production budget) have to rake in a lot more cash to succeed. Also the end of the year is the time for horror movies to shine. So I have a feeling a few more will be joining this list by December.

I underlined all the horror flicks so they would be easier to spot, and highlighted a few surprises in green.

Horror Hack of the Week: Brad Fuller and Platinum Dunes

I’m not sure how Brad Fuller fell into the cushy job of being a “producer” for Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, but I know he must pray everyday that it never ends, because if it does end, he will be forced back to the life of obscurity that he came from.

Fuller seems to have the same roots as Michael Bay, producing softcore porn until making the huge jump to Hollywood blockbuster status, and by “blockbuster” I mean visiting the “already done graveyard” to dig up old ideas. Fuller’s claim to fame is taking classic horror films and turning them into polished turds to be sold to a new generation of bored teens. So far Fuller has delivered four remakes and one PG-13 jewish propaganda film disguised as a horror film, making one wonder what he would ever do if Bay stopped spoon feeding him. I shouldn’t have to point out how much little talent it takes to take an old movie and update it, especially if you’re just the “producer” of the film. I wonder exactly what Brad Fuller does besides getting jerked off by Bloody Disgusting and posing for pictures next to cars. What does he actually “produce?”

Paul Bettany and Cam Gigandet to Star in PRIEST

Hmmm! Paul Bettany and Cam Gigandet (Twilight, The Unborn) starring in a new vampire movie called, Priest, directed by Scott Stewart for Screen Gems sounds like…Poop!

But I guess I should give it a chance. The film was adapted from a TokyoPop comic with the same name, and is about a warrior priest (Bettany) who has to track down a band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

Cam Gigandet plays a half-vampire sheriff who helps the priest find his niece because he is in love with her, blah, blah, blah…

We will keep you updated!

Horror Report Card: Last House on the Left

Here is a list of all the theatrical horror releases for 2009, their MPAA ratings and opening weekend numbers. As you can see it has been a strong year for R-rated horror films, and the $55.2 million opening for Watchmen also helps in the R-rated film debate showing they can still make money. The only somewhat down side of the success at the box office we’re having is four out of the six films have been remakes, with only one sequel and one original horror film, The Unborn. Last House had the worst box office numbers for remakes this year and was beaten by The Rock’s Race to Witch Mountain and Watchmen making it number three on the charts this weekend.

Odette Yustman is Hot and in Arena Magazine

I wouldn’t go as far as to call Odette Yutsman “Hollywood’s Newest Scream Queen,” but Arena magazine did, so I’ll just roll with it. You may remember Yustman from Cloverfield and you may remember her white panties from The Unborn, but besides that her horror credentials are a little bare.

Stepfather Remake PG-13

PG-13 horror movie defenders need to go away, because their argument is outdated. The PG-13 films of today, are geared towards the short-attention-span youth, who rather text message than watch what is on the screen. They’re not built on good stories and atmosphere like the non-R horror films of the past, thus making the PG-13 vs R-rated horror debate officially dead!

My Bloody Valentine Defeated by Paul Blart

While it may be embarrassing to be beat by a movie called Paul Blart: Mall Cop, My Bloody Valentine was not alone, The Notorious B.I.G.’s biopic was was also defeated by the comedy. MBV snuck in at number three, while Notorious had to settle for the number four spot, with only a few hundred thousand dollars separating the two this weekend.
