Thanks, murderpunk, but I disagree on the potential for the characters: SLIME CITY was always meant to be a stand alone effort, Johnny was always intended to be a franchise character. I think the short GRUESOME film is the best thing I've directed and people seem to be indifferent about it, so I don't see much point in continuing in that area. It takes 2 - 4 years to get a project done, and they consume your entire life, and I'd rather spend my free time with my daughter than on a project people aren't going to love. So far, the other responses I've gotten to Johnny have been excellent, so if the other reviews are as good as the one in Horror World, the book wills will be a success. have a major paperback publisher interested in a wide release for 2009. All of the GRUESOME projects will keep me busy for another 2 years, and nextyear I'll still be celebrating the SLIME CITY 20th anniversary at different cons and festivals.
Quite honestly, my failure as a filmmaker has always been to find a producer to raise money for my projects. I'm not doing any more $50,000 films, it's impossible to make anything that's any good for that kind of money. I'm not going to go door to door blowing people so they'll give me $ for, either; that's what producers are for. There are a couple of people out there looking for money for SLIME CITY MASSACRE and DEADLY RITES; if they come back to me and say, "Okay, we have the money. Let's shoot!" I'm not going to say no. But I'm not breaking my back looking for money only to have it always fall through at t he last minute. I've been doing that shit for 20 years. It sucks the life out of you, and like I said, I have a daughter to take care of.
If the money came together for SLIME CITY MASSACRE, it would be a one-time sequel, something aimed squarely a t the fans of the first film(though the GRUESOME Mini-Movie is also aimed at the fans of the first film, and few people seem to give a shit about it, so who's to say I'll please anyone with a sequel? I have no plans to "franchise" that story beyond a potential sequel.
The only thing I'm interested in doing at this point are sequels to my novel PERSONAL DEMONS. That's where my heart is, and if I can find time, I'll write the sequels even if they're just for myself.
Go digital. You can make a movie for close to nothing if you're creative enough. In this day and age, I'm not buying the whole, oh it takes 2 years, I don't have enough money to make anything crap. I demand a new movie, or I'm going to fight you, good sir.

I get a real kick out of someone telling me how easy it is to make a movie on digital--I just wrote an entire fucking book on the subject! It takes the same amount of time to write, direct, anct, create special effects and score a movie regardless of what format you shoot in, and video actually takes longer to light because it's so volatile. If you want something to look good, you hire a professional crew, not some stoned high school dropouts. That's why most digital films are CRAP. We're going to shoot on digital, we're going to do it right, and it's going to cost at least $100,000.

I didn't say easy. I said cheap. I bet when I get going on my feature, it'll be well under a 100 grand, and I think people will enjoy it just fine. I really don't have enough experience to argue with you too much at the moment. I'll just have to show you up in about a year. Get ready to write another book.

Sure you can make a movie "cheap." I made NAKED FEAR for $7,000. Justin Channell made DIE AND LET LIVE for $1,000 and I liked that. Budget doesn't dictate quality. I just happen to have written a very BIG script that I want to make which cannot be made in that range. But since you know so much, keep talking shit. And write your own damn book--or tell me how I should do that too.

I wasn't talking shit homey. It's all in fun. I suppose the type of movie that someone is trying to make has a lot to do with the budget, ay? I'm not even sure what this discussion is even about anymore. I just wanted you to make a new movie.

No, it is definitely not easy. It took us 3 years to finish Isle of the Damned! Alot of that had to do with cast availability, effects, editing, and limited time during certain shoots. There really is alot of blood and sweat put into making a movie...but the finished product is worth it. After seeing everything come together with Isle, I'm pretty stoked.
