Author Topic: The Books of Blood by Clive Barker  (Read 4344 times)

Is anyone else here a fan of these?  This is the most bad ass collection of horror stories that I know of.  There are six books in all, although the last three have name changes here in the states, but are all called the Books of Blood in the UK.

The first three were published in the states under the title Books of Blood volume 1, volume 2, and volume 3.  Then, the last three were titled after the first story in the collection.  "In The Flesh", "The Inhuman Condition" and "Cabal".

Four films have been made out of these stories so far.  "Rawhead Rex", which appears in Volume 3 under the same name as the film..  The film is 80's cheese and does no justice to the original story.  "Cabal" was made into the film "Nightbreed" follows very close to the original story, changing a few things here and there.  Directed by Clive Barker, and was going to be the start of a trilogy.  It stars director David Cronenberg as a creepy psychologist/serial killer.  "The Forbidden" was made into the film "Candyman", perhaps the best of the bunch here.  "The Last Illusion", which appears in "Cabal" was made into the film "Lord of Illusions", a film which I happen to like, but most seem to dislike.  Oh well.

"The Yattering and Jack" which is about a demon trying to collect a man's soul by driving him insane, was adapted into a teleplay for the series "Tales from the Darkside".  I have not seen this so I can not comment on it.  I do know that the story rocks.

"The Body Politic" from the collection "The Inhuman Condition" was adapted for the 1997 TV anthology film "Quicksilver Highway".  If my memory serves me correctly, it stars Matt Fewer as a man whose hands have become sentient and are starting a revolution, where hands are liberating themselves from their owners body.  Think the hand scene from "Evil Dead 2" on a mass scale.

"The Midnight Meat Train" is currently in development.  If the poster for it is any indication, the best is yet to come.

The best story of the "Books of Blood", at least to me, is "Dread", which is supposedly going to be made into a film as well, with a script by Moriaty (aka Drew McWeeny) from Ain't It Cool News.  Moriaty also wrote the script for John Carpenter's Masters of Horror episode "Cigarette Burns".  It's a story about a couple of college students who are studying the nature of fear, but one of them takes it too far by kidnapping people and forcing them to confront their fears head on.

Wil I know has read 'em.  Anyone else here a fan?  If not, give them a try and you will be.  There is a very sexy collector's edition of the first 3 volumes you can get at Barnes & Noble for $16.  Go get it if you don't have it already or I will ban you.

To my everlasting shame, I haven't read all of them. I have Vol. 1, read some of Vol. 3, and I have the last 3 books. My favorite is probably "Cabal" and "Lord of Illusions". I liked the movie version of Lord of Illusions even if it did change some things around from the original story. I wish they could have done more with "Nightbreed". Can't wait to see the Midnight Meat Train made into a movie.

"In the Flesh" would be a bad ass movie.  "Down Satan" would be good if they could give it an NC-17.

Yup..those would be cool. I'd like to see "Babel's Children" made too.
What would be great is if they made a "Master's of Horror"- like series..for Showtime or something, based on Books of Blood.

The Body Politic was awesome.  It really gave me the creeps and made me think.  A thoughtful spinetingler, highly recommended!

You know I searched for years for the "Tales From the Darkside" VHS with "The Yattering & Jack" episode and I finally found it then never watched it. I should watch it and review it here.

I gave ya enough. Plus I gave you my heart and you left it in San Francisco, remember?

I watched it though and it sucks, Phil Fondacaro plays the Yattering, what a rip. You forget how cheap those Tales From the Darksides really were , especially when you see them today. It didn't look like they had a demon problem, it looked like they had a midget problem.

It's just Phil in some bad halloween store horns, half naked. Nobody wants to see that. If you can find a copy of the graphic novel I suggest that, it was better. Now where did I leave my copy at?

...or just read the story again.
