Video stores used to be great

There are alot of very well written articles on video store nostalga and i dont think i could top them but i do often think back to the time when there were more video stores than drugstores and everyone had its own charm and distinct Horror section....One of my earliest vid store memories was in Severance mall in Cleveland Hts .The third inclosed mall every constructed in the U.S.  they had a small vid store in the center of the mall,  (in the early 80s) and i remember seeing the box for MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY(banned in 31 countries) ..All the mom and pop stores were small and dark which seemed to add the perfect atmosphere...and they would rent horror to kids.....

You don't see too many of the mom n pop video stores anymore, they've all gone the way of the dodo bird. Video stores, along with everything else in this nation have fallen victim to the major chain syndrome....where this country is just turning into one gigantic strip mall. The Blockbusters and Hollywood videos in your town are exactly the same as the ones 100 miles up the road. It really gets me down sometimes.

It's a real shame. I miss those old hole in the wall video shops that would have those dusty vhs' sitting on the shelf, some of which looked like they had'nt been rented in years. You could'nt walk into a Hollywood video and rent faces of death, but you could find em in your local independant video store. Even REEL video, which started off as an independant is owned by Hollywood video.

I feel like i really dropped the ball when all those vid stores when out of buisness..i tried to buy like one movie and they would refuse to sell me any less than 50..it wasnt until years later that i had some resources to be able to buy 100 movies at 5 bucks a piece at a few hanger ons before Ballbuster and Morningwood video took over

I tried to order BLACK SUNDAY thru VIDSTAR video on Coventry rd in Cleveland Hts  for like ten years (88-98) and the owner couldnt get it...He also had those under age TRACY LORDS pornos hidden somewhere in the bowels of the store but he wouldnt give em' up.....

Another great thing about those small video stores was that after a title rented so many times (?) they would sell it to you for $10 . I scored alot of good flicks that way....

I think we all miss video stores, but thank god  Netflix came along. It may not be the same thing as going to some hole in the wall and finding some dusty VHS, but  at least thy carry stuff that the chain video stores do. Also if you live in a city Mom & Pop places do exist more than shitty suburban towns.

netflix might be good and all....but good luck finding cool stuff like the slumber party massacre or whatnot on there. i prefer downloading movies (LEGALLY OF COURSE wink wink).

Netflix may not have everything but they do have a lot of obscure stuff you couldn't get otherwise. Is there a Slumber Party Massacre DVD even in print?
