HOUSE OF CLOCKS...you're jokin'...right? I thought that movie was pretty terrible.
Naw, I liked it for real real, not for play play!

I thought it was pretty trippy and the old people cracked me up. But I don't begrudge anyone else for disliking it, or any Fulci movie, as the complaints leveled at his films are completely justifiable (as are the compliments).
I'm actually very picky about the Fulci films that I like, I feel Argento has made better films overall, but...the films by Fulci that I like, I REALLY fuckin' like!
City of the Living Dead is a good film for 3 reasons, 1 - the GORE, although its practically the same regurgitated guts and brain squish scene over and over, its still great! 2 - THE FANTASTIC SOUNDTRACK! and 3 - the ATMOSPHERE is extremely heavy. But overall, it can be kinda boring for someone not compelled by soundtrack and atmosphere, things which I look for in films.
I get the reasons why people like the movie, and I like the film for the same reasons -- it's just the ending that does it in for me. It's a cool movie up until that point. House by the Cemetery is another film that is praised by gore fans, but it's really completely horrible. If Fulci was as good as making a coherent plot as he was with atmosphere in his Lovecraftian movies, he'd have created some of the best work the horror genre has ever seen. All of the plots of the "Gates of Hell trilogy" had piss poor plots that came secondary to the visuals. Which works with "The Beyond" because that story never really has any particular plot points to begin with.
Any of you guys dig Don't Torture A Duckling? I thought that was pretty cool for one of his lesser known films. My favs would have to be The Beyond, NY Ripper, Zombi 2, House by the Cemetery, City of the Living Dead, Touch of Death (I find this one very funny) and Demonia.
I need to see Don't Torture a Duckling, and I haven't seen NY Ripper since 1997 (I thought it was ok). Touch of Death I haven't seen and Demonia is hands down the worst film I've seen by him. How the hell are you going to kill a mother fucking ghost with a harpoon gun? The Psychic is one of his better films that I've seen, and I'd say belongs in anyone's "Best of Fulci" list.
I just hate people who say they love horror movies and then you find out that all their favorites are basically comedies. And Ghostbusters is a bad example.
I hope you weren't talking about me! I gave examples of some good horror comedies, it doesn't mean that they are my top picks of all time. Although I will say I love quite a few of them very much. And as for Ghostbusters being a bad example of a horror comedy, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a BETTER example. Sharply written, well acted, actually has a budget, manages to work in some Lovecraft type shit, and works in scares along with the laughs without "crossing streams". It's a classic and for good reason. Now, if I had said Ghostbusters II....well....you'd be right.
Just to put this out there, these are my fave horror movies and in no particular order:
Suspiria
The Beyond
Texas Chain Saw Massacre (original)
Dawn of the Dead (original)
The Thing (Carpenter's remake)
Halloween
A Nightmare on Elm St.
Shaun of the Dead
Lisa & The Devil
Last House on the Left (original)
Re-Animator
From Beyond
Ghostbusters
Glitter
Near Dark
Cemetery Man
