It was a fan-made project by filmmaker Kevin Tancharoen, which was titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. When Warner Bros. decided to go all-out with its marketing of the game itself, they tapped Tancharoen to take his creative visions of the series to the web in Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which has been a widely successful Internet sensation.
Now, Warner Home Video is taking Mortal Kombat: Legacy to high-definition home video. As Mortal Kombat sees the likes of Freddy Kruger as a downloadable fighter in tomorrow's update, it looks like the Mortal Kombat brand isn't going anywhere with the announcement of this Blu-ray release for Legacy, which will debut on November 8, 2011. It will contain all nine episodes of the web-series and will host a bevy of supplemental materials.
Note that we specifically mention Blu-ray but no word about DVD. Warner Home Video has not committed to a DVD release for the title, opting instead for a Blu-ray-only outing for the web-series. This could be seen as many things; paired with the DVD sales numbers, it could be a historic step towards the impending collapse of the DVD format, or it could be viewed as a distributor viewing this particular release as a high-definition success due to the fact that it is gaming related, and the PlayStation 3 is a Blu-ray player in itself.
It will contain bonus materials and extra features, and the Blu-ray will be available for the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $19.98.
The Blu-ray will feature the following bonus materials:
