Okay, here it is. The Official “Unofficial” HYB DC/Marvel Animated Shows/Movies Thread. Yes, I like cartoons, let’s get that out of the way right now. And, yes, I’m a grown man in his early 40s, as of this opening post. There are, however, some cartoons that I watched as a kid that I can’t watch as an adult, like Magilla Gorilla, Top Cat, Tom and Jerry, and a whole host of others that don’t readily come to mind. The exception being Looney Tunes. I can stil watch those to this day.

I also loved super heroes cartoons when I was a kid and they have carried into my adult hood with no abatement whatsoever. And the leaders in this genre are still Marvel and DC. Now, with anime also being present in the world, I hold my super hero flicks and show to high standards, meaning, first and foremost, the action animation, as I call it, as to be dynamic, fluid and cool to look at. I’m all right with the character designs taking a hit, as long as when the action kicks in the kicks and punches don’t look the heroes and villains are suffering from some kind of living rigor mortis.

If this does happen, I’m out of the show. Case in point, WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN. Excellent character design but the action animation wasn’t consistant, even within the episode itself, not to mention the entire season. Another case in point, but here’s the opposite, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN. Simple and sometimes crude character designs, but the action animation, at least, in that pitch perfect first season, was excellent.

I’m more a Marvel fan than a DC one, but Marvel has a shitty track record when it comes to their animated fare, and an superb one when it comes to their live action flicks. DC, on the other hand, has just the opposite problem, and, you know what, that’s fine with me, ‘cause their animated movies and cartoons as absolutely incredible when it comes to both the action and the character animation. BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, BATMAN BEYOND, JUSTICE LEAGUE, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED, and, I think, they’re gonna surpass the excellence they did with their JUSTICE LEAGUE series with this new YOUNG JUSTCIE series, premiering January 7th on Cartoon Network at 7pm. I saw the two part debut they aired in November, and holy shit, was it awesome.

Marvel, I think, is finally coming into their own with THE AVENGERS: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES. The animation styles are clearly a hundred and eighty degrees apart, but the action animation has yet to disappoint me. I commend them for putting out a prologue to the series in the form of a 20 part, 5 minute each, micro-series. Wow! I was impressed.

So, here’s what I currently own:

MARVEL:

THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN (First Season Only)
FANTASTIC FOUR (2006) SERIES
ULTIMATE AVENGERS (Animated Movie)
HULK VS. (Animated Movie)
PLANET HULK (Animated Movie)

DC:

BATMAN BEYOND: THE RETURN OF THE JOKER
JUSTICE LEAGE (2001) Two-Part Debut Episode (Still trying to come up with the money to get the entire series)
SUPERMAN/SHAZAM: THE RETURN OF BLACK ADAM (Animated Short Film)
SUPERMAN DOOMSDAY (Animated Movie)
JUSTICE LEAGE: THE NEW FRONTIER (Animated Movie)
WONDER WOMAN (Animated Movie)
SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES (Animated Movie)
JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS (Animated Movie)
BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD (Animated Movie)
SUPERMAN/BATMAN: APOCALYPSE (Animated Movie)

I don’t own a lot of the Marvels ‘cause I wasn’t all that impressed with the animation, and I don’t own BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS and GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT because the story lines didn’t do anything for me. The mistake they made with GOTHAM KIGHTS was chopping the movie up into small stories, which with an already short running time leave little room for me to get into an one tale.

Seriously looking forward to DC’s ALL-STAR SUPERMAN February 22nd.

Here it is, guys, the artwork for ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, and I gotta say I'm loving it! You know, this might be my first DVD/Blu-Ray Combo buy since it's priced exactly the same as the Special Edition. Remember, it's coming out 2/22/2011.

It comes in a Single Standard, 2-Disc Special Edition (standard), and a DVD/Blu-Ray Combo:

In All-Star Superman, the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) and, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation – which accelerates his cell degeneration. Sensing even he will be unable to cheat death, Superman ventures into new realms – finally revealing his secret to Lois, confronting Lex Luthor’s perspective of humanity, and attempting to ensure Earth’s safety before his own impending end with one final, selfless act.

The celebrity-packed voice cast is headed by James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane, and Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) as Lex Luthor. The stellar cast includes seven-time Emmy® Award winner Ed Asner (Up) as Perry White, Golden Globe® winner Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Ma Kent, Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as Jimmy Olsen and Linda Cardellini (ER) as Nasty.

Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy), Catherine Cavadini (The Powerpuff Girls), Finola Hughes (General Hospital), Alexis Denisof (Angel), Obba Babatunde (That Thing You Do!), Michael Gough (Batman) and John DiMaggio (Futurama) round out the voice cast.

Based on the Eisner Award-winning DC Comics series/graphic novel of the same name by Grant Morrison with illustration by Frank Quitely, All-Star Superman is executive produced by animation guru Bruce Timm and directed by Sam Liu (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by acclaimed comics writer Dwayne McDuffie (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths).

All-Star Superman 2-Disc Special Edition DVD features approximately 1 1/2 hours of exciting extra content, including:
• Feature film (est. 75 min)
• Sneak Peak at Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie
• Featurette: “Superman Now” – In a moment of inspiration, Grant Morrison was provided an opportunity to revamp the Man of Steel into something modern, something more relevant for today’s audience. This is the story of All-Star Superman – where it all started, and what it came to be
• Two bonus episodes from animated television series handpicked by Bruce Timm

All-Star Superman Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack will include approximately 2 1/2 hours of intriguing bonus features, starting with all of the content available on the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD and adding:
• Featurette: “Incubating the Idea” – A conversation with Grant Morrison
• Audio Commentary: Bruce Timm and Grant Morrison
• All-Star Superman Digital Comic Book
• Standard and high definition versions of the feature film
• Digital copy on disc of the feature film

"The All-Star Superman comic was the work of two immensely talented creators at the absolute top of their game," said Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer, DC Entertainment. "Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman is one of those modern classics, and I can't wait to see it brought to life as an animated film."

“Grant Morrison’s fascinating comic vision comprised all the aspects of a truly great film – action, drama, fantasy, romance, sacrifice and hope – and the animation team of Bruce Timm, Sam Liu and Dwayne McDuffie have passionately translated that vision into an enthralling movie experience no Superman fan can resist,” said Hersin Magante, WHV Marketing Director of Family and Animation. “As the next entry in the ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, All-Star Superman stands as a shining example of the creative heights possible from the partnership of Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video.”

I don't own many but I've seen a lot. I own Batman: Mask of the Phantasm on VHS, which was good in 1993, but I don't know how it held up. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and Batman: Gotham Knight (.99 Black Friday). I never watched Public Enemies because I read the comic and didn't really like it. I've seen most of the DC movies (Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern) but the BEST comic book series EVER is Justice League Unlimited! If you have not seen this don't walk run and get it asap. I 100% guarantee you will love it.

Oh, no, Wil, I have seen JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED. I currently own the entire series in taped VHS form from Boomerang one winter. I still need the entire JLU/JLU UNLIMTED SERIES, which is still priced at an arm and a leg. You are SO right, THE BEST DC ANIMATED SERIES EVER. And, then I saw a trailer for this, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUEa-T2Cy8o&feature=player_embedded), and I thought, FUCK! I think DC just crowned a succesor:

More arms and legs I need to give up:

I just came in my pants. My friend Andrew has the original Batman Dark Knight cartoon (whatever the hell it is called. The one on Fox) box set. It is really nice but after re-watching them it wasn't as great as I remembered. He also got the first season of the original X-Men cartoon. Although a classic and a very important time in my teen years, it is really dated. We went to his shore house and got drunk and watched it last summer.

For some reason I doubt it, but do you like the Teen X-Men series or Teen Titans? And are you excited for the new Cartoon Network series coming?

Are you talking about YOUNG JUSTICE? Go a couple of posts back, I posted two trailers for them, if that's what you're referring to. The TEEN TITANS they aired on CARTOON NETWORK, I was NOT a fan of. Didn't like the animation style they used. You're right, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES (1992) doesn't quite hold up. Neither does Bruce Timm's SUPERMAN. I think the Timm Universe finally started to come into it's own with BATMAN BEYOND.

And for DAVE, although I'm not a fan of this series anymore, the X-MEN from the mid 90s is currently making it's way to DVD. There's currently 5 volumes in existance: Here's a DVD EMPIRE link: http://www.dvdempire.com/exec/v1_list_series_single.asp?series_id=34219

I don't own much super hero stuff sadly, unless you count the Stripperella and Electra Elf DVDs. I have been contemplating about getting all of those animated X-Men DVDs (Not sure on Evolution though). For a while I've been kind of detached from super heroes. I've been thinking of buying old serials for Batman and Superman but I always find something else I desire more. Hell my next check may be going straight to the Spawn Animated Series, the Spawn movie, NFL dvds, and Magic from 1978. Shit, I need to start my Spawn comic collection too along with getting all the Batman movies. FUCK!!!!

My top five superheros are:

5. Spiderman
4. Cyclops
3. Gambit
2. Spawn (Not Marvel or DC but whateva) -You could also argue that he's an anti-hero but he still fucking rules.
1. Batman

My top five favorite villans are:

5. Sub Zero
4. Scarecrow
3. Doomsday
2. Apocalypse
1. Joker

I just saw a mention of it during Adult Swim, those trailers LOOK FUCKING AMAZING. I just spent the last 10-minutes telling everyone I know about it. I love that there always has to be one token black on these shows.

I have the Spawn set, and bootlegs of the original X-Men. Also a few of the old like 40's Superman cartoons and the Gen 13 movie that's meh. I've got a fair amount of Anime as well, but nothing really superhero style.
