OAKLAND — Two pedestrians died in separate incidents involving the same Amtrak train Friday afternoon, one in Berkeley and another about two hours later in Oakland, Amtrak officials said.
The first fatality occurred about 12:20 p.m. just north of the Berkeley station near Second and Gilman streets as Amtrak's Capitol Corridor train No. 535 was heading southbound, Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said.
"A trespasser was struck and killed and the train was held there until about 1:50 p.m.," Cole said.
Passengers then got back on the same train and it continued on its route, made its regular stops in Emeryville and Jack London Square, then struck and killed another person about 2:15 p.m. on a section of track between 23rd and 29th avenues in East Oakland, Cole said.
"After the second incident, that train had to be canceled and the passengers were taken off by bus," he said.
Late Friday, the Alameda County Coroner still was in the process of trying to identify the bodies, coroner spokesman Mike Yost said.
No train passengers were injured in either incident. Amtrak and Union Pacific police are investigating the fatalities.
