Not the greatest sequel, but definitely not the worst. It was sort of a transition piece. I mean, the only returning character was Freddy and people were just expecting something different. I find it highly enjoyable and I think the chase scene between Freddy and the lead girl during the party has been topped by few.

Yeah I don't know why this movie gets bombed so much. Freddy crashing the party is possibly the coolest Nightmare scene out of the whole series. The whole wandering into a gay bar, then the gym teacher getting his flabby ass whipped to death might've been a little odd.. but ignoring that, I dig this movie.

I love the party crashing scene and I thought the part when the guy from Total Recall gets fucked up was pretty cool haha

Very different direction and feel to it than the rest of the series, but that's one of the reasons I like it. I'd probably place it as my third or fourth favorite of the series.

Idk about a different direction, but sure. I think that the only different thing was freddy's way out into the real world. That's probably what you mean. I don't think you can't really call it a "different direction" since the later sequels just started to copy the precedents set by the first one and this was only the first sequel. The real black sheeps to me were #6 and New Nightmare. Freddy's Dead didn't even take place in or near Springwood for a majority of the movie and New Nightmare was the only one where the characters grasped that NOES was a movie and that Freddy was in the "Real" world.

I was talking about the fact that it's the only Nightmare flick where Freddy uses someone (as a vessel) to do his killing for him and it's more about the kills taking place in the waking world rather than the dream world. Again, that doesn't make it bad at all. Just it's a different layout/scenerio than the others (besides Craven's New Nightmare of course).
I also agree with Andrew, the party massacre (as well as the Freddy birth scene) are one of the most memorable scenes in the franchise. Right up there with Tina and Glen's deaths in the original and the NOES 3 marionette and prime time TV kills for me.
