THE HARVEST HAS BEGUN: Sitting down with the women of ZOMBIE FARM!
Meet the women of ZOMBIE FARM. They’re smart. They’re sexy. And they’ll be lucky to survive this invasion of undead oddities as ghouls invade the small California town, Muerto Verde.
“Horror is, and always has been my favorite film genre,” says Danielle De Luca (The Curse of Lizzie Borden). De Luca plays blonde vixen, Jennifer – a party-crazed college gal, just looking for a good time in Pismo Beach. It’s difficult to tell what’s worse for Jennifer, dealing with the undead, or her wise-cracking boyfriend, Rob (Javier Morga).
Kimberly Fisher plays Linda, best friend to De Luca’s character and girlfriend to the story’s protagonist. On the way to Pismo Beach, a group of college kids get stranded in the soon-to-be-zombie-laden town of Muerto Verde. Good times, blood, guts and zombie attacks ensue. Fisher is a model and actress who has appeared in an array of projects including roles in CSI and Tomcats.
Over the course of filming, more than 50 gallons of blood was spilled, much of it on actress Rachel Balzer (Shakedown), who plays the seductively sassy, but yet somehow simple, Sweet Thing.
Federal Agent Spaulding (Christine Cowden) is a homeland security specialist. She’s always ready for action and always more than happy to splatter zombie brains across the landscape. She’s armed and dangerous, but there’s no guarantee she’ll make it out alive.
Without giving away anything, what can you tell us about your character?
De Luca: “I see Jennifer as a typical college girl. Hormones and boredom can drive her to be slightly edgy at times, but underneath her tough, sarcastic exterior, lies a horny, carefree chick, just dying to be unleashed.”
Cowden: “Agent Spaulding, is one tough broad!” She gets right in there and doesn’t let the zombies phase her. She has a job to do.”
Fisher: “[Linda] My character is your stereotypical hot, sarcastic, funny, bisexual girlfriend. There has to be one in every movie!”
De Luca: “It’s just hard to tell who she (Jennifer) wants more – her boyfriend, or her best friend.”
Balzer: “Sweet Thing is an ever so slightly disillusioned girl. She parades around in a Dorothy costume, for reasons that I’m not sure even she knows. Oh, yeah, she’s also an incurable flirt.
What can you tell us about working with the blood and gore?
Fisher: “That it [blood] will get in my hair and take days and days to wash out.”
Balzer (SPOILER!): “Yes, my character does get killed.”
Cowden: “I expect to be looking extremely attractive in my blood soaked blouse … [there’s] nothing more glamorous than gasping for air with blood everywhere.”
De Luca: “I want viewers to feel every painful, nauseating nanosecond … and that’s going to take an extremely creative, imaginative cast and crew, and an endless supply of blood.”
Balzer (SPOILER!): “I get my insides ravished by zombies and I expect the gore to be off the charts. I was certainly bloody enough afterwards to warrant it. It was gross, but worth it.”
We know there’s action, blood, guts and inbred cannibal farmers … anything else?
Cowden: “I love when my character gets to shoot the zombies. Hey, someone has to do it, and Agent Spaulding can definitely handle it. I am really beginning to like that powerful feeling of carrying a gun. Is that a good thing?”
De Luca: “Ever since I was little, I’ve taken sick, demented pleasure in watching gruesome death scenes. The more blood and gore, the better! I feel totally in my element on the set of Zombie Farm.
How was the experience of working on ZOMBIE FARM and being a farm hand?
De Luca: “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be working on such an original horror film – come on – Inbred cannibal farmers? I can only say it’s going to be incredible. And, if you’re a true horror fan, you’ll have to see it.”
Cowden: “I was very fortunate to be a part of Zombie Farm. I love playing an FBI agent. It’s so much more fun than being the sweet, innocent girl.”
Fisher: “Being a fan of horror movies, I am excited to be a part of the Zombie Farm family. It’s always nice to work on a project with a great crew and cast.”
Balzer: “I had a terrific time being a part of Zombie Farm. It was my second horror movie … and I look forward to doing many more.”
Zombie Farm is a high definition feature film that was originally being made for a straight-to-video release. However, with the interest the movie has been getting, producers now expect to have a theatrical release in May. The movie also features Bobby Field (15 Minutes, Guy in Row Five), Javier Morga (One Life to Live), Joe Estevez (Werewolf) and John Philbin (Point Break, Tombstone).
The story follows four college students who inadvertently find themselves victim to a zombie attack. Along the way, they meet up with local town folk, and a couple of trigger happy FBI agents.
Producers B. Luciano Barsuglia and Vince Lara had originally intended all the gore to be done onset. Barsuglia, who also wrote and directed Zombie Farm, continually wanted more, more and more blood. Over the course of shooting the movie (and pouring gallons of blood and to actors and sets), Lara and Barsuglia discovered economical and effective ways to digitize many of the effects. So, now, along with the gobs of on-set blood, there will be an estimated 60 digital effects included in the movie.
“One of our main concerns has always been making the blood and gore look good,” notes Barsuglia. “We want it to look really good. Whether it’s live action or whether it’s digital, it will all turn out gross and gory.”
Rachel Balzer (Sweet Thing) was able to experience some of the onset gore firsthand. Her character gets swarmed by a pack flesh-hungry zombies. And, of course, the dig and grind away, tearing apart and cannibalizing her innards for a late morning snack.
All of the characters, regardless of whether thy live or die, share in the blood-o-rama. We can’t tell you who comes out alive, but we know this for certain: nobody comes out clean.
