I can definitely see and agree with all the criticisms this movie has been getting, the "love" story is kind of a joke, and we don't really get to know any of these characters at all. Benecio Del Toro, as badass as he is, isn't someone you really find yourself rooting for (I was behind the wolfman every step of the way though). Also, this damn thing took forever to get going, I wanted to scream, "WOLF THE FUCK OUT ALREADY!"
But when he DOES...ohhhh man this thing gets goooodddd. The movie has this amazing rich goth atmosphere, full of fog and moisture and the gore is off the chain. Also, I'm very curious to see what Rick Baker had planned but I gotta say, this is the best use of CG we've had for transformations EVER. They're pretty damn good I gotta say. The scenes of the Wolfman, leaping across rooftops and ripping people apart are simply amazing and visceral. Great stuff.
Once that first transformation happens, the movie pretty much takes off like a rocket and the wolfman effects are goddamn brilliant, seeing such an homage to the original really put a smile on my face. Hugo Weaving as Detective Abberline (wink wink for all the Ripperologists) also kicks a lot of ass.
For all it's shortcomings I gotta say I had a hell of a good time with it, it's janky as hell in some spots, but with a movie that had so much production trouble as this one it was to be expected. In the end though, I gotta say, it's one of those B-movies with absolute A production values and actors. And buckets and buckets of gore.
I'm cool with that.

Great stuff. I love how incorporated some of the Werewolf of London in there.

I think he meant Werewolf Of London, the old film, not An American Werewolf In London.

I actually think werewolf of London is superior to the original The Wolfman in a lot of ways! But I caught the shot outs to that one as well. It really was like they took nods from a ton of werewolf movies and threw them all in there, I caught a couple of ideas from Wolf too (remember that one? With Jack Nicholson? I dig that one). The particular thing that caught me from AWIL was the whole a werewolf can only be killed by someone who loves them deal. I think they damn near repeat that line word for word.

I thought it was awesome. Some things were a little on the silly side, but I felt that the movie did a good job of paying it's respects to the original, while still doing it's own thing. All my friends complained about the love interest and the predictable ending, but I kind of liked it. Two people can love eachother without having to have a 3 minute steamy sex scene. They got the point across that the two dug one another, and then got back to the monster running around gutting people. I think they did a good job of laying off the CGI for the most part... some of the transformations at the beginning of the final showdown were a bit on the cartoonish side, but it wasn't as horrible as I thought it might end up being. One thing I didn't understand. Why the hell was there a CGI bear, and a CGI elk in this? Universal can't afford to have actual animals in their movies anymore? That shit looked fucking terrible. In fact.. I think that's the only thing I can really complain about.. which is awesome! Remakes are typically retarded, BUT if you're going to remake a movie, I think we should hit up these old black and white films before we start touching shit that came out only 20 years ago. How about a rad Brain that Wouldn't Die remake?! Whatever, The Wolfman kicked ass.
