Overrated Horror Directors?

We often hear horror directors being applauded, celebrated or even salivated over. But, how many really deserve the hype? Who do you believe are the most overrated directors in horror?

I love horror movies and have many favorite directors, among them: John Carpenter, William Castle and Alfred Hitchcock. I think Eli Roth is incredibly overrated. I've watched several of his movies and can't figure out how he gained such popularity, when so many are doing precisely the same "fraternity" style horror and have been for decades. I think Rob Zombie is a phenomenal musician, I also liked White Zombie, but again, I don't think direction or scripting is his strong point, based upon his movies.

I don't think Eli Roth is overrated -- not yet anyway -- I think fans were excited that he likes the same thing about horror movies that horror fans do. That is why he was popular.  His first film showed promise, and Hostel wasn't that bad. I think he learned his lesson by being pushed into making a sequel.  I still have my fingers crossed that he has  one great horror film in him. Now if he would just stop playing Mr. Hollywood and make the movie.

I will take Roth over  Adam Green any day. Hatchet was a spoof of the slasher film not the throwback he said and believed it was. It was kitschy and poorly done.

Wes Craven and George Romero might not be overrated but they're certainly washed up. I cringe when I see there names on a movies now.

I agree.  Eli's Cabin Fever was fantastic for me, but ever since the Hostel movies I feel things have changed, which was bound to happen...I mean he is Tarantino's boy, and most everyone thinks Quentin is bigger than Jesus hahaha! Personally I think Robert Rodriquez totally showed him up with his portion of the Grindhouse thing, even though it was way too over the top to be a grindhouse type movie.  And the whole Rob Zombie thing is a joke to me...I almost slapped a dude a couple days ago for saying House of 1000 Corpses is like a BETTER version of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre!  WTF?!  That's the kinda talk that makes me worry about our future horror fiends.

John Landis (not a horror director, but always treated as such)
Danny Boyle (same as above)
Edgar Wright (ditto)
James Wan
Alexandre Aja
Adam Green
Darren Lynn Bousman
Tim Sullivan

Eli Roth gets the Brain Hammer seal of approval for life for doing the Bloodsucking Freaks dvd commentary track.

Rob Zombie is the fucking man.

Piranha 3D was rad...but I still don't see Aja as "the future of horror."

People were lining up to suck his dick after High Tension, and since then he delivered a Hills Have Eyes remake (that sucked), Mirrors (which sucked), and now a Piranha remake. Not exactly a great track record.

Yea, I'm not so much a fan of their recent work. Sometimes it seems like a good one will have a really great thing going and something throws a wrench in their creative machine. Maybe it's success accompanied with the lack of the drive they once had to succeed.

In Romero's defense...cuz I'm always coming to his defense on this MB...both Diary and Survival of the Dead may have been subpar in comparison to his earlier zombie epics, but I still found both flicks entertaining enough...I didn't find myself looking at the clock waiting for them to be over, which I have done with some of our modern directors efforts.

idk the saw flicks r like a guilty pleasure to me. i know they are shear garabage, but fuck.. we all all know there are much worse shit coming out more frequently. i blame the jews.

No, it's not that, it's the bullshit hype most people who have seen them give it. "Oh man, it's the bloodiest movie of all time!" "It's so great!" "Nothing like this has ever been done before!!!" Bullshit. SAW is a very sanitized, overrated series with cartoon gore effects, completely fucking up the one good aspect they could have.

Agreed. I fucking hate the Saw flicks for a similar reason, besides the fact that they are all the same in the end. Hopefully the new one ends with everyone having an orgy and then commiting suicide on top of a pile of active grenades on a spaceship as they fly towards a huge meteorite. That'd be pretty rad.
