what i really don't get is how/why people criticize him for being unoriginal. i mean... is a town full of zombies eating people original, or this guy that goes around killing teenagers? no, but everyone in the free world loves that shit.

i'm just glad to see any non PG-13 horror film that's not filled with B&W "ghosts", edited so that they move fucked up like the Grudge and Ring throwbacks.

Yeah this and the first one had a lot of elements people that complain about horror films like or say horror films lack in. It also included a strong female character. The main girl did not fall for all the traps set for her, it was a nice change of pace from the chick running up the stairs to get away from the killer thing, thay a lot of people harp on. She did nothing wrong to get caught and only got got caught because she was fucked, that is way scarier.

 I was asking a question. I'm not saying he's the greatest filmmaker of all time I just enjoy what he does.  I don't think anyone who got into horror movies as a legitimate fan from the start did so because they wanted to be accepted into the mainstream of cinema and win an oscar.  we just enjoy these type of movies.  everyone has their own particular taste, so if its not your thing its not your thing, but I do have much more than half a brain and still enjoy a mindless gore fest.  I completely agree that its annoying when a group basically circle jerks a famous person, but its equally annoying when people bash them just to be that one guy that bashes them.  You are entilted to your opinion, however, what bothered me was not that you dislike Eli Roth, I have no personal connection to him, but you do it under the guise of defending against homphobia.  I didn't take anything in the movie(s) as homophobic, however I was agitated when you made the connection that being a misogynist was a symptom of latent homsexuality.  That is something people always say and pisses me off.  In relation to the movie, I think the reading of it (Hostel 1) based on the words and actions of the characters would be that those three guys are perhaps closet cases and that is what the director is implying about them, not himself.  While watching the behind the scenes documentary, the production designer, who is gay, makes this connection as well.  Not every film has to be the next AFI classic, sometimes its fun just to watch a good crowd pleaser.   And yeah it happens that Tyler's quote ended up in the print ads, which was an awesome day for HYB, but no one said we were going to kiss ass, I don't think anyone on this site has ever done that.  You have this forum to write you opinion, which was well written even if I disagree with it, and I have the right to repond to it.  If you don't want to write original articles anymore don't pin it on me and my post.

Well, I thought the Scream Queens section was a good place to discuss Eli Roth!

Dr. Royce, I LOVED your anal-ysis of Eli Roth's cinematic turds and the misogyny and homophobia in them. I read an interview with that muppet in the Chicago Tribune today and it got the old gray matter ticking, about how he was replicating childhood traumas that he suffered by vomiting through splatter flick after splatter flick (and who knows what his psychiatrist dad makes of his crazy son's work? Be interesting to know...) and now making others do the same, or trying to and getting paid well for it.

I have been troubled by this muppet's agenda since Hostel came out. I saw Cabin Fever, and thought it was a sub-Troma piece of worthless shit, and can only assume Peter Jackson thought it was great cos it made him think back to his own splatter movie-directing daze. I have not seen Hostel or its sequel; I have better things to do with my time than watched warmed-over Guinea Pig (which I HAVE seen) or Bloodsucking Freaks (ditto; interesting Roth does a commentary on the DVD for that splatterporn shit - he clearly loves women being brutalized and is a deepdish misogynist, as you pointed out) shit. I wondered about the psyche producing this kind of Abhu Ghraib-inspired diseased filmshit, and had to laugh at his worthless assertion that the Hostel movies are 'political commentary' instead of misogynistic, misanthropic torture-porn jerkoff shit. They're politcal commentary in that they show how excited America got by Abhu Ghraib, and how fucking xenophobic a country this is (ironic for a country full of people from other countries)...but those side effects were purely secondary and unintentional.

And yeah, Roth's psyche. Picked up the odd factoid here and there, and quickly came to the same conclusion you did: that he is a repressed (insofar as I know - who knows who he gets up to round Hollywood) homosexual. His movies seem like pure sexually repressed body horror, the equivalent of  a five-year-old kid chewing up their food and leaving their mouth open to let you see it to gross you out...but with a Cronenberg-like fear/disdain/disgust with the flesh. As I said, I have not seen Hostel or its worthless sequel, so maybe I shouldn't comment (love to see you write something on the repressed homosexuality in Tarantino's flicks - no wonder he and Roth bum-buddy-buddied up so quick), but I think you got it totally right when you said what you said. You saved me the trouble and wasted cash of having to see those films to look at them in exactly the same way you did, so thank you for that. Roth won an award by Men's Fitness magazine last year by being their 'fittest director'. Which means he spends a lot of time round gyms. As do...many gay men. And he clearly hates women. Think his skin disease helps a bit of the body horror element too, self-loathing and loathing of those possessed of more beautiful physiques too, which he destroys onscreen.

Bottom line: guy's a worthless talentless damaged retarded adolescent mentally unbalanced sick creep, let's face it. The fact Amercia has embraced his sick shit so readily makes me uneasy. But the second body-hostile Hostel didn't do boffo box office on its opening weekend, so let's hope this kind of worthless guitar-picks-of-the-future 'new splatter' will soon die the death it deserves. And I can't WAIT for the next generation of Roth-inspired unlaid idiots to inflict their worthless empty graphic sociopath(et)ic self-loathing misogynistic schizoid flesh-fear fantasies on us.

Fuck Eli Roth. Right up the ass. Sure he'd like that a lot.

I grew up on horror/splatter movies - I've seen practically every piece of shit known to man, from Dawn of The Mummy to Guinea Pig to Nekormantik to Men Behind The Sun to...you catch my drift. All I see these daze are worthless retreads of films that should have disappeared without a trace after being made. I mean, fucking remake THE TOOLBOX MURDERS? WTF? Camerson Mitchell must be turning in his grave.

But I still don't trust spoiled rich kid Roth's worthless, talentless agenda ONE BIT. Sooner he disappears the better. And I know Dr. Royce wasn't being entirely serious in what he wrote, but I suspect he still wonders more than a little about Roth's sexuality. Otherwise why bother going to such trouble and length to write an article like that? Some of the things he quoted were sorta-humorous and satiric, certainly, but Roth...just is wonky in the brain somewhere.

Anyway, it was a dry, sarcastic joke that only I got, and I only wrote it for the novelty value.  But its one of those things that makes ya go "Hmm." 

I'm done with Eli Roth.  Come December, I won't call HOSTEL PART II the worst movie of the year on sheer princple.  I won't give that movie the satisfaction.  But I'm a horror critic, so I'm stuck with watching his movies.  Lets just hope that one of the things Tarantino taught Roth was to take REALLY LONG PAUSES between his movies.
