Hatchet II going unrated in theaters, even though it was a limited theatrical release, is probably the most important thing to happen last year for the horror industry. Even if it did get pulled shortly after by AMC theaters, it left a mark that hopefully becomes a trend.
I'm not sure you're right about this.. I'm pretty sure in the long run, it's just a victory for major studios and the MPAA. Because, honestly, are there not major studio titles with more upsetting, more realistic gore getting tagged with R ratings and going wide? There's a grudge against the little guy in the system, so yes, I'm glad they tried, but they still got bullied out despite. Sadly, I think Repo: The Genetic Opera is the only genre film to really score a victory against the studio system in the last couple years, which is a bummer because it's a shitty movie. Hatchet II is still never going to reach a larger audience than the one it would have had it gone straight to DVD.
On the other topic, Serbian Film looks sick, and I've been waiting forever to try and see it in a theater! I want to be in a whole theaterful of unsuspecting viewers getting psychologically raped by that movie when I see it. It might never happen though, so I hope the DVD gets a date soon.
