I’m sure those who purchased this album on it’s official release date are much like me. We just wanted the new fucking songs! Yeah, Ronnie is back with Sabbath for the time being for a tour and this collection of highlights (thats up for argument) from the four albums these chaps released together…”Heaven and Hell”, “Mob Rules”, “Live Evil”, and “Dehumanizer”. Check out my previous review (HERE) for a word on those first two milestones of Metal albums.

I’m sure most of you into Metal already know about the reunion of Sabbath with with the fucking godly Mr. Ronnie James Dio. They played a sold out show in NYC (Radio City Music Hall) a couple days ago…

This six song hammer-smash-to-the-nutsack is killer. Imagine a long lost collection of moldy German thrash songs unearthed 20 years after the initial recording and you’ll get an idea of the songs herein. From the reverb heavy production, spazz riffing, demon-screaming solos, pure acoustic drums that hammer like HELL…

“We regret that this had to be a mini-LP, but Andy was involved in an unfortunate accident and was unable to go into the studio with us to record additional tracks. Fortunately, he is making a full recovery and will be able to record a full length album for 1992. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and family of Lisa Thompson who was not as fortunate and Andy. We should all recognize the frailty of life and fight to preserve it, not destroy it”

I always felt like this band fell through the cracks and could have been quite a huge force in the Metal scene…the songs on ‘Why Play Around?” are just too good and stand up strong against ANYTHING released around that time

Back in the late 80’s the major labels launched a confused signing frenzy of thrash bands. The reason for this can be traced back to the amazing success of Metallica, you know, back when they were a fucking amazing band.

In an emotional sense, the Doomdeath Metal genre is the most taxing and relentless on one’s soul. The slow, mournful tempos and bleak, yet mountain-like riffs most bands in this ilk use really get to you. I can still remember when I first heard My Dying Bride’s ‘the angel and the dark river’…

Its worth the price of admission just to get the 1985 demo, which was a tape-trading legend back in the day! In all, you get 15 tracks with the last five featuring newly recorded vocals and leads on old, fuckin classic material.

‘King of Stars - Bearer of Dark’
Deathgasm Records

Back when I was doing my ‘zine in the late 90’s, Emperor was widely regarded as the best black metal band by most. I was one of the few who thought they were overrated. I can’t deny the talent of the band, but the wispy, [...]

‘Fearless Undead Machines’
Relapse Records
- Review by Shane
Since its Zombie Week here at Horror Yearbook I thought I would take a look back at a classic album inspired by zombie films. ‘Fearless Undead Machines’ is all about the undead in every way. From the spectacular cover art by Wes Benscoter to the songs themselves its pure [...]
