After releasing multiple amazing episodes (”Family,” “The Black Cat”) of the Showtime horror anthology series “Masters of Horror” onto DVD, it looks like Anchor Bay has begun to scrape the bottom of the barrel of Season Two. The latest episode to hit DVD “We All Scream for Ice Cream” has none of the nudity or excessive gore that has made “Masters” a fan favorite. Fans might be quick to point out that neither did Stuart Gordon’s prior episode that showcased his take on Poe’s “The Black Cat.” Which is true, but that episode succeeded on the strength of his directorial skills and an excellent script. “Ice Cream Man,” however, arrives from the director of such memorable films as “The Temp” and possibly the worst Stephen King adaptation of all time, “The Langoliers.” With a script adapted from a John Farris short story by the guy who wrote the two worst “Texas Chainsaw” films and the two worst “Critters” films, why would I have expected anything else?

“Re-Animator” director Stuart Gordon ha made a career for himself by developing his cinematic versions of the works from some of that all time greatest Science Fiction and Horror authors. He’s successfully adapted everything from H.P. Lovecraft (”From Beyond”), to Edgar Allen Poe (”Pit and the Pendulum”), to Ray Bradbury (”The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit”). Hell, Gordon even did a decent job bringing a David Mamet play (”Edmond”) to the screen. Never fearful of revisiting familiar themes (he’s done Lovecraft no less than four times) Gordon returns to the macabre world of Poe once again.
After providing fans with “Cigarette Burns,” easily the best episode of the inaugural season of Showtime’s hour-long horror anthology show “Masters of Horror,” John Carpenter returns for the second season with “Pro-Life.” While its title would lead one to believe that the episode centers around the much-discussed abortion debate, it’s really more of a backdrop…
Adapted from an F. Paul Wilson short story, “Pelts” tells the tale of Jake Feldman (Meatloaf), a struggling furrier with a chip on his shoulder, who is obsessed with two things: ditching the “small-time” for the “big-time” and getting lesbian stripper Shana (Ellen Ewusie) to change teams for him….

Distraught father Anton and mother Judith (played by Lori Petty of Tank Girl fame) try to resurrect their dead son by sacrificing a young girl to a demon.
I have read some other reviewer’s opinions and they seem to state that their interpretation of Jenifer is as a monster or severely disfigured woman. Some even called her an “alien”. My personal opinion is that she is none of the above. I think that would be missing the point of the film. I believe that Jenifer is not a human, but rather a manifestation of man’s desire. Inevitably, all the men lose their wives, children, jobs, freedom, and eventually their lives. It is a cautionary tale to all stupid men, uh, well, I guess all men.
Ellen (Bree Turner) finds herself struggling for survival while hunted in the woods by Moonface. As her abusive relationship with her husband Bruce unfolds onscreen via flashbacks, she turns the tables on Moonface in a variation of “the survival of the fittest”.
