Greg Lamberson and Emil Novak, co-founders of The Buffalo Screams Film Festival are definitely on their way to mastering the formula. They’ve put together a program highlighting local films, national films, and international films, of all shapes and sizes. The venue is a great choice, a perfectly sized independent theater called The Screening Room. Another great thing about Buffalo Screams is the audience, many of whom are filmmakers themselves, whether or not they have a film screening in the festival.

Some of the highlights have been…

An Evening With My Comatose Mother has been sweeping the low budget horror festival circuit, coming from a pack of horror fanatics in Utah. Dorothy Pritchard is a high schooler, who has picked up a gig mother-sitting a neighbor’s elderly mom, who just happens to be comatose. And, of course, things aren’t what they seem. The half hour long short feels like a Raimi film when he’s at his most absurdist, never letting the viewer settle on what’s real and what isn’t.

Cosas Feas (Nasty Stuff) is an import from Mexico. A young boy’s class begins teaching sex ed, and he starts realizing just how different he is from his peers. It’s like an episode of the Twilight Zone directed by David Cronenberg, with a little bit of Napoleon Dynamite thrown in.

Festival founder, well known local filmmaker, and comic book guru, Buffalo’s own Emil Novak’s Decayed finally premiered to a packed house. Every seat was taken, this writer had even to sit on the floor to check out this film! Decayed is a work of mad genius, with different plotlines intricately weaved throughout this low-budget opus. It’s part cyberpunk conspiracy theory film, part Romero zombie epic, 100% Emil.

We were joined by the smart and sexy Page Davis of POP Cinema, known for their low budget horror releases through their many labels, including Shock-O-Rama. She gave a short lecture on distribution for micro-budget cinema, offering up some juicy tidbits and industry tips for the festival goers.

We’ve already raved about Buffalo Screams Selections Absentia and The Millennium Bug on HYB, but the biggest fan reaction came for a rarely screened short called Swirlee. Producer Roy Frumkes introduced the film, and afterwards was demanded to return to the front of the theater to talk about it by a standing ovation. Starring and directed by Street Trash’s James Lorinz, the film about the real life Mr. Softee and his rough life costars, believe it or not, David Caruso.

Right now the Saturday programming is just kicking off, and we’re heading over to check out a couple Lovecraft films, a screening of Roy Frumkes’s classic, Street Trash, and something that sounds absolutely wild called The Super.

Come back to HYB soon for more elaborate reviews on some of these films, including chats with directors, trailers, and more Buffalo Screams coverage.

There’s something eerie going on in Buffalo. And this Halloween, it’s the place to be. Not only is it a haven for massive, elaborate haunted houses, the past few years the horror film community has been nothing short of booming. Last year HYB attended the first annual Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival, and came back with only good things to say. For the most part, it was a local affair; the genre filmmakers of Western NY getting together to screen their films and celebrate their cinematic successes. It looks like this year they are expanding a whole lot, bringing in films from all over the world, including a few titles we raved about at Shriekfest last week, some classics, a couple films from Filmmaker Roy Frumkes, and my good friend Roy Frumkes!

HYB will be On The Scene, so visit us for more Buffalo Screams news. Check out the line-up below.

Novak, who co-founded Buffalo Screams with author and filmmaker Gregory Lamberson (Slime City Massacre, “The Jake Helman Files”). In all, 48 films will screen at the five-day festival, which runs from Wednesday, Oct. 26th – Sunday, Oct. 30th at the Screening Room Cinema Cafe in Amherst, New York.

We’ve got another entry in the October run of genre festivals, The Everybody Dies Horror Film Fest in Orange County, CA. This one goes for a sweet, short two days from October 21st to the 22nd.

It looks like a nice smattering of slick short films with a few features thrown in the mix. This could be a really fun little event. I combed through all the trailers available on the films page and I know there’s a few I’m pretty curious about seeing. I especially recommend An Evening With My Comatose Mother, a completely absurd, hyperactive 80s homage flick that has been doing the genre festival rounds. If the other films programmed at this fest are anywhere near as fun as Comatose Mother, pretty sure you should be there.

Really, as technology gets better and cheaper, low budget horror films are starting to all look remarkably good. It’s exciting, bad movies are getting better, cheap movies are getting easier to look at. If you’re a horror fan and you are sick of buying tickets for bad films in big theaters, you have no excuse not to check out an event like the Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival.

The insane about of festival laurels on this trailer cracked me up, but I’m not at all surprised by them:

For those of you keeping score of HYB’s daily Shriekfest round up, three very different films impressed us.

Kenneth Cran’s The Millennium Bug reminds us that a silly, gross, over the top, monster movie can also be expertly crafted. The acting, direction, editing and cinematography were as well done as the effects.

if Isle of Dogs is any sort of indicator, Tammi Sutton is on her to being a new genre superstar. It is one of the most entertaining indie thrillers to come along in years.

Despite loving the previous two films, Absentia ranks in as my personal favorite movie of the festival. Clearly I wasn’t alone. When a film affects me the way that this film did, I’m reminded of how powerful and amazing the horror genre be. Mike Flanagan and company should be proud and you should see this film wherever, or whenever, you can.

And, the jury and the audiences have declared their winners as well.

Grand Jury prize for Best Horror Feature Film: Absentia directed by Mike Flanagan
Best Sci-Fi Feature Film: Pig directed by Henry Barrial
Best Thriller Feature Film: Isle of Dogs directed by Tammi Sutton
Best Supernatural Feature Film: The Dead Inside directed by Travis Betz
Best Short Film: Negative Image directed by Karl Holt
Best Super Short Film: Certified directed by Luke Asa Guidici

For a complete list of all of the winners please go to www.shriekfest.com .

As the local multiplexes begin to have fewer and fewer worthwhile genre flicks, there are tons of festivals just like Shriekfest, small and large, across the country that are screening wonderful genre fare such as The Millennium Bug, Isle of Dogs and Absentia as well as The Dead Inside, Pig, The Hike, and The Feed. Stop wasting your money on more bad hollywood horror films, support your local horror festivals, support independent film!

We’ll see you at the next Shriekfest.

ROUND THREE

Over the course of the Shriekfest International Horror Sci Fi festival this writer has watched puppies being chewed up, mutant babies ripped from wombs, a man’s head cleaved in half, an elderly couple chain-sawed to pieces, and alt rock musical numbers. Even after all that, nothing has left me as upset as the climatic image of the festival’s final film did: a single sneaker left in the middle of the street.

ROUND THREE WINNER

ABSENTIA directed by Mike Flanagan

What an amazing movie! I was not expecting to be as shocked, disturbed, and moved as I was by this film.

Two sisters, Tricia and Callie, are dealing with ghosts. The ghost of their troubled history, and the actual ghost of Tricia’s husband, who disappeared eight years ago without a trace. Tricia has just been allowed by the state to declare her husband dead “in absentia”. At the same time, her wayward sister Callie, recently out of drug rehab, comes to visit. Their suburban neighborhood has seen a rash of missing people and pets over the years. Near Tricia’s home is a long, dark, filthy tunnel. Callie jogs through the tunnel one morning and…

I will say nothing more except: SEE THIS MOVIE.

It’s ironic that the same weekend the underwhelming Dream House hits theaters, I had the privilege of discovering this powerful little indie ghost story. Absentia is a truly original, scary, thought-provoking supernatural tale. It’s touching, sad, and human. It reminds me of the classic film, Don’t Look Now. Both are about desperate people dealing with grief and the ghosts of lost loved ones. Absentia, an independent film that was almost completely financed through the fundraising website Kickstarter.com, obviously doesn’t have the glossy big budget sheen of that film. But it does share its deeply human core, its mood of sadness and pain, and its shocking and disturbing climax.

The highest of praise goes to writer/director Mike Flanagan and his cast. I am officially a fan and I want to see all of his work. Courtney Bell as Tricia and Katie Parker as Callie are phenomenal. Their performances are genuine and affecting.

Horror films like this are a dying breed. I was hit with a load of blood and guts during the Shriekfest festival. That’s usually enough for me. The state of SFX is at its highest. Anyone can make a decent severed head these days. But films as masterfully crafted as Absentia are ghosts in themselves. SEE IT. SUPPORT IT.

RUNNER UP

PIG directed by Henry Barrial

A man wakes up in the dessert with his hands bound and a name scribbled on a piece of paper. Is it his name? If not then who exactly is he? Why was he tied up? These are the intriguing questions at the start of the film PIG.

Amnesia movies are always a mixed bag with me. The final piece in the puzzle is never as intriguing as the road to uncover it is. The final twist at the heart of PIG‘s mystery is actually pretty good. Writer/Director Henry Barrial creates a suspenseful mystery about how much our memories shape us. The main character stumbles around with little knowledge of himself, yet he keeps running into people who claim to know him and offer very different accounts of his identity.

Yes, it is reminiscent of Memento. But Pig is an absorbing and satisfying mystery itself and is worth a look.

The 2011 Shreikfest festival is done for now. But look for Horror Yearbook’s ROUNDUP, coming soon, along with the festivals official award winners.

ROUND TWO

The second night of the Shriekfest 2011 International Horror Sci-Fi film festival offered an eclectic mix of zombies, subterranean pet munching monsters, motorcycle helmeted psychopaths, mobsters, rape and the occasional musical number. Kudos to festival organizer Denise Gossett and staff for programming such a diverse night of genre fun.

It was a close call between three very different films but…

BEST FILM OF ROUND TWO

ISLE OF DOGS directed by Tammi Sutton

Personally, I love a good film noir, and director Tammi Sutton presents a brutal, horror-noir hybrid full of plot twists and steamy sex. A mob boss discovers that his wife is having an affair with one of his hit men and all hell breaks loose. What’s really spectacular about the film is that it plays like an erotic sex thriller, yet pours on heaps of over the top violence alongside its double and triple crossing storyline.

Director Sutton and cinematographer Salvador Lleo De La Fe give the film a stylish, glossy look; rich in color and composition. Along with a great musical score, kick-ass performances, and wonderfully gruesome violence, Isle of Dogs is a sweet piece of pulp fiction.

And how about the performances of that very talented cast! Although Egg Hogg and Barbara Nedeljakova are perfect as the doomed lovers, they are far overshadowed by resident Horror bad guy Andrew Howard, of the I Spit On Your Grave remake, as the brutal, completely whacked-out psycho mob boss Darius. His is one of the best performances so far this year. A few reviews have compared Howard’s immersion in the character of Darius to Ben Kingsley’s role in Sexy Beast. In my opinion, that’s unfair, as Andrew Howard is even better. His final scene (which I won’t detail, to reveal it would be cruel of me!) is an awesome piece of acting. It is Oscar worthy.

Keep an eye out for this one.

Tonight’s RUNNER UP is….

THE HIKE directed by Rupert Bryan

The Hike has the potential to be one of the most controversial films of the year. The outrage that the Straw Dogs remake (which, despite only being out in theaters for a mere two weeks, is already gone and forgotten) somehow managed to incur from critics and filmgoers could loom over The Hike. For ninety squirm-inducing minutes, we watch as a group of beautiful, likable, young women are raped and murdered by a gang of psychopaths.

The movie is very, very disturbing. It is also sharply directed, well-acted, and powerful. But I have to admit that most of the Shriekfest audience seemed relatively uncomfortable during the screening.

Horror fans are pretty accustomed to rape as a plot device, but the tone of the individual film has a lot to do with the way it is perceived. I Spit On Your Grave and other movies of that ilk are grungy exploitation films, and as such, aren’t necessarily taken seriously by many. The Hike is a straightforward thriller and its scenes of rape and violence are extremely ugly. One of the rapists even engages in necrophilia, having his way with the corpse an unfortunate young woman.

I wasn’t kidding when I said this movie was disturbing.

The Hike will surely be a lightning rod when it is released later this year.

HONORABLE MENTION

THE DEAD INSIDE directed by Travis Betz

As I can imagine many are, I was very curious about the demonic-possession-cum-zombie-horror-cum-romantic-dramedy musical, The Dead Inside. Well, It’s actually more of a chamber musical. There are only two characters, and no dancing or overblown production numbers.

The Dead Inside concerns a too cutesy for words thirty-something unmarried couple. Fi, short for Fiona, is a zombie horror novelist whose writer’s block drives her to hiding out, drunk, in a self made fort in her living room. Wes is an amiable wedding photographer. They’re a fun couple that like to drink and take showers together. But, as conflict must ensue, a tragedy befalls them.

Wes brings home a mysterious box that he finds at one of his wedding gigs and gives it to Fi. She immediately begins to lose her grasp on her own identity, and begins to take on characteristics of a mysterious woman named Emily. The couple sing several off-Broadway rock musical style songs charting the disintegration of the relationship as Wes fights to reclaim the identity of the woman he loves and Emily fights to keep her newly acquired body.

It’s a clever idea. Oddly enough, It didn’t need the songs.

The basic concept of the film is so good, the acting so excellent, the writing so smart, and inematography and direction so vibrant, that the songs just feel extraneous. I was truly wrapped up in the twisted story and the musical interludes only halted the dramatic flow. You could edit all the musical numbers out and the film would still be very good.

For the record though, the musical highlight of the film is “I Am Here To Stay” in which Wes and Emily challenge each other for the body of Fi. It’s the one number that feels perfectly organic to the story. The other numbers are just too cute, they feel annoying and unnecessary, done for the sake of having a gimmick.

With those reservations, I still really loved this movie.

Director Travis Betz is a talent to watch.

What film will catch our attention on day three of The Shriekfest festival? Stay tuned.

ROUND ONE

The opening night of Shriekfest screenings happened to coincide with the first Los Angeles rainfall of the season. That didn’t dampen the excitement for the fans who filled The Chaplin Screening Room at Raleigh Studious in Hollywood.

Three films screened last night and in our opinion, round one goes to Kenneth Cran’s The Millennium Bug; a twisted high energy horror mash up about a family on a Y2K camping trip that are attacked by a backwoods clan of murderous miscreants.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention… there’s a giant prehistoric bug burrowing up through the ground and eating everyone.

This utterly insane and totally entertaining flick earns all of the praise its been getting from festivals across the country. Recently in low budget horror, we’ve seen so many lame attempts at 80′s throwbacks that to see one so professionally crafted seems like a gift from God.

Every element works. Cran’s direction is fast paced, crisp and creative. The film never lets up, and it just looks great. Cran wasn’t only the director, he filled several shoes, also working on the awesome production design (especially the family’s dilapidated shack!) and even designed the Creature himself. Cran’s work is a testament to just how much a filmmaker, even with very little money, can achieve with fresh ideas and lots of talent.

I’m going to go out on a limb here. I’m anticipating that Cran will go on to have a career akin to other genre filmmakers that moved up the ladder to gain high profile Hollywood success, like Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. That’s how impressive his work on The Millennium Bug is.

Even better are the actor’s performances in the film. The whole gibbering backwoods psycho routine can be incredibly annoying in the hands of less qualified actors, but not here. The Crawford Clan could give The Fireflies and The Sawyers a real run for psycho-clan supremacy. Kudos to lead baddie John Charles Meyer as Billa Crawford. Trek Loman as Uncle Hibby, Sandi Steinberg as Granny, Adam Brooks as Fij, Ginger Pullman as Pearlene, Ben Seton as Rip and Dustin Yoder as Opheus.

The final word is, The Millennium Bug is a must see.

Tonight’s Runner Up for best film is The Feed, directed by Steve Gibson.

This film was a pleasant surprise. I’ve grown quite tired with the faux documentary horror film trend, but The Feed offered a much better viewing experience than I had expected.

The plot involves a team of paranormal investigators from a show called Ghost Chasers To celebrate their four year anniversary, they broadcast a live investigation form inside a small Pennsylvania town’s haunted old movie theater. The theater has been a town taboo since a series of unsolved murders, and the team from Ghost Crashers are summoned to check it out by the theater’s new owners.

What’s really delightful about the film is that it plays exactly as if it were airing live on TV, complete with spot on perfect commercial breaks, color bars and static, and even a logo for the fake television channel, Pulse TV, popping up throughout the film at the bottom of the screen. Those commercials also feature a fun cameo from a genre icon, but to reveal it would spoil a great joke.

Like Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity before it, The Feed creates quite a few spooky moments from black and white video footage of creepy things moving in the darkness. Although the film stumbles at the finish line with a disconcerting and abrupt ending, fans of the first person horror genre will enjoy The Feed as well.

Return tomorrow for night two of screenings, and round two of HYB’s Shriekfest coverage!

A masquerade ball is something that should be held at Cosplay gatherings so perverts can ogle barely dressed jailbait, but the Monster-Makers Bash costume party with the industry’s top special effects artists sounds a little more interesting than kids playing dress-up. There is also the Halloween Book Festival. Most conventions are so focused on movies that horror novels normally get ignored. The only horror book convention I know of is the World Horror Convention, but Michael Laimo being a dick ruined it for me. Plus they keep holding them in Utah. Who the fuck wants to go to Utah?

Speakers include Bryce Zabel, producer of NBC’s Dark Skies, authors Martin Olson, Joe McKinney and David Moody, who will be hosting the Writing About the End panel, and Michael Rooker from The Walking Dead. A panel about zombie apocalypses by authors who actually wrote about the subject has to be better than the Ladies of the Evil Dead menopause panel.

Visit the Aliens to Zombies web page for dates, times and prices. If you attend, drop me an e-mail and let me know how it was.
