Asking the team behind the over the top Feast franchise to write and direct Piranha 2 was a bad idea that resulted in the loss of a lot of fans.
Piranha 3D wasn’t a box office smash, so alienating a big part of its fan base probably wasn’t the smartest move. I assume the point of a sequel is to get the fans of the original to return to theaters, not to send them away screaming. And that’s exactly what Dimension did when they announced Gulager and his Project Greenlight cohorts would be helming the ship.
Casting the movie as if it were a VH1 reality TV show probably didn’t help much either. David Hasselhoff jokes stopped being funny years ago, and Gary Busey is only funny when Meat Loaf is yelling at him. If stunt casting and stealing Rose McGowan’s machine gun leg is all Gulager and team had to offer, it’s no wonder why Dimension yanked Piranha 3DD from its planned November 2011 theatrical release.
Dimension’s decision could’ve also been helped by the disappointing $8 million opening of Shark Night 3D a few months earlier. If a PG-13 killer fish movie bombed in theaters, it was probably safe to assume that an R-rated killer fish movie wouldn’t have performed much better. Then there was the mixed reaction to the crappy looking Piranha 3DD trailer. If fans of the original didn’t jump ship when the creative team was announced, they sure did when the trailer was launched. It was painfully obvious that the sequel was going to be filled with a nauseating amount of wink at the camera moments, and bad one-liners.

The trailer was my first exposure to this film. I remember seeing it on TV and it immediately caught my interest simply because of its title—HUMONGOUS! Based on what you see in it, you can easily assume it’s a monster movie, and that’s what I thought it was. I also thought it took place in a jungle and not the woods.

I was preparing to do this week’s DVD releases when Final Destination 5 got me thinking… Is this truly the last Final Destination film? Should I buy it on DVD and complete my Final Destination collection, or wait for a box set?

I guess horror movies aren’t popular this time of year because there are only two releases this week. Maybe that’s a good thing since you should be buying presents for your friends and family instead of DVDs for yourself. Check out this week’s crappy releases below.

Believe it or not, I’ve never seen a Mission Impossible movie, but I’ve seen Precious over and over! Paula Patton played Precious’ teacher, the sexy “Ms. Rain,” but before she was helping illiterate teens learn to read, she starred in the horror film Mirrors with Kiefer Sutherland.

I love Full Moon! It’s really one of my biggest obsessions. I own almost every movie on DVD and VHS, and I’m always finding new ways to give them my money. Like I just did when I bought Killer Eye 2 and Mutant Hunt during their recent Christmas sale.
What do Dan Haggerty and Bill O’Reilly have in common? They’re both fighting the war on Christmas! While O’Reilly battles department stores from the comfort of his studio, Haggerty must save a young woman from evil Nazi elves who want to mate with her on the biggest holiday of the year. Who’s the pinhead now?
Elves has never been released on DVD. So unless you own the VHS or DVDr the only way to watch it is on YouTube. Thanks to Shock Cinemaify for uploading this hard to find gem on the interwebs!

Shark Night 3D’s PG-13 rating didn’t help it rake in much more money than the R-rated Piranha 3D. It only helped make a boring movie even more boring. That’s why I don’t understand why studios don’t film two versions; a PG-13 version to attract teens in theaters, and an R-rated version for adults. It would only take one nude scene and a little extra gore to release a worthy “uncut” or “unrated” version to DVD or Blu-ray. Katharine McPhee’s side boob and Sara Paxton in a bikini isn’t enough to make Shark Night a worthy addition to your Netflix queue or DVD collection
After releasing his magnum opus Mutilation Mile last year, underground auteur Ron Atkins now gives us the release of his long awaited The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell, a story of two psychopaths who meet up in a post-apocalyptic world.
