Shriekfest 2011 Opens With a Shriek!

Shriekfest

The 2011 Shriekfest International Horror and Science fiction festival kicked off last night with its opening night party hosted at the B52 Club in Hollywood. Festival founder Denise Gossett and the festival staff threw a great party for the indie Horror film community, giving fans a chance to mingle with the filmmakers.

As LA’s longest running film festival dedicated to the Horror/Sci-Fi genre, Shriekfest is noted for launching careers and a multitude of breakout horror hits. What will be this years breakout hits form the 2011 festival? Horroryearbook will be your eye on the films and filmmakers to watch out for.

We spent last night chatting with the guests of the party, and here’s what buzz around the festival was all about:

* The creature feature film The Millennium Bug
* Lionsgate’s recently purchased women hikers in peril film The Hike
* Bloody revenge thriller Isle of Dogs
* Zombie musical The Dead Inside
* Twisted sisters drama Absentia

We’ll be updating you all weekend on what WE think are the films to watch. Keep an eye on the website all this weekend and next week for reviews and coverage on the festival.

Giveaway: Win Scream 4 on DVD

In Scream 4, Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey and Gale, who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (played by Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghost Face, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.

Vampire Diaries: The End of the Affair

Elena continues to search for Stefan, leading Elena and Damon to Stefan’s old apartment in Chicago where he lived in the 1920’s during his ripper days. Stefan had his victim’s names listed like trophies, getting joy from tearing them apart limb by limb, victim after victim. Elena still believes that Stefan can be saved and refuses to give up.

Interview: Blitzkid

With tons of kick-ass acts such as The Other, Calabrese, Gorgeous Frankenstein, The Crimson Ghosts and countless others, the horror punk scene is stronger than ever these days. And one group, that definitely deserves to be mentioned among the very best bands of the genre’s “second wave” as well, is Blitzkid from Bluefield/Virginia! Since these cool ghouls have just released an excellent new album and announced some pretty important line-up changes, I’ve hooked up with founding member Argyle Goolsby and asked him to fill me in about the latest news from the Blitzkid camp. Here’s what he had to say…

October Horror DVDs: A Serbian Film

The film I’ve heard so much about but haven’t seen is finally coming to DVD on October 25th. No special features have been announced.

Milos, a retired porn star, leads a normal family life with his wife and son in tumultuous Serbia. A sudden call from his former colleague will change everything. A leading role in a new production will provide financial support to Milos and his family for the rest of their lives. A contract insists on his absolute unawareness of a script they will shoot. The director and his cohorts will stop at nothing to complete his vision. In order to escape the living cinematic hell he’s put into, and save his family’s life, Milos will have to sacrifice everything.

The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) Trailer

Here’s the full length trailer for The Human Centipede 2. Make sure you check back in a few days for our Tom Six interview and review!

The story of a man who becomes sexually obsessed with a DVD recording of the first film in the series, “The Human Centipede,” and uses sandpaper to pleasure himself whilst watching the film. He decides to create a “human centipede” of his own, this time comprised of twelve victims as opposed to the first film’s three.

Sophie Monk: Because She’s Hot

Nude and The Hills Run Red is all I should have to say about these Sophie Monk photos, but Wil demands I write more to get paid. Too bad I have no idea what to say about some chick getting out of an SUV. She has nice legs? That’s a nice up skirt save with her hand? Did you watch Terra Nova or Monday Night Football last night? Are you looking forward to Halloween? Why isn’t Sophie Monk naked in more horror movies?

Meh, check out Monk getting out of an SUV below, while I try to find something better to post today.

The distributer Cheezy Flicks is dusting off Billy the Kid vs. Dracula and Jesse James Meets Frankenstein in a 2-movie set entitled Shockorama. The collection will be available on October 25th.

New Horror Short FAMILIAR Creating Quite A Buzz

Toronto filmmaker Zach Green announced his new horror film the Familiar is set to hit the film festival circuit very soon. The film stars Robert Nolan, Astida Auza and Cathryn Hostick as the seemingly idyllic yet ultimately doomed Dodd Family.

Hot Babe of the Week: The Cast of Dark Shadows

I can’t take a poop without my copy of Entertainment Weekly, and this week I can’t stop staring at their exclusive picture of the cast from Dark Shadows. The movie was written by the guy who wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Seth Grahame-Smith) and stars (From left) Helena Bonham Carter as Julia Hoffman, Chole Moretz as Carolyn Stoddard, Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard, Gulliver McGrath as David Collins, Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters, Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis, Johnny Lee Miller as Roger Collins and Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard.

Dark Shadows hits theaters in 2012. Check out the EW photo below.

The Vampire Diaries: The Hybrid

Stefan’s evil-streak was even more short-lived than expected. I figured there was still a part of the moralistic, brooding Stefan there. He still kills at command and does whatever Klaus asks of him. He continues to push Damon and Elena away at all costs, even if he has to act cold and dismissive towards those he loves the most. Still, he no longer appears to have any joy in the bloodshed. Stefan doesn’t take pride in his gory work that he did just an episode ago. Klaus quickly calls him on this, “So broody. Your self-loathing is suffocating”. Klaus is clearly losing his patience with Stefan, well aware that the good guy is seeping through the surface. There’s no fun in that for Klaus, he gets more joy from corruption. Besides, Stefan isn’t quite his ideal travel companion.

DVD Review: Ratline (2011)

Eric Stanze has been one of the indie horror scene’s most prominent and influential filmmakers for at least 20 years. His production company Wicked Pixel Cinema has given us low budget wonders such as the 1994 shot-on-video demonic possession picture Savage Harvest, the 1998 Super 8 surreal, experimental art house horror film Ice From the Sun, one of the most disturbing and graphically brutal serial killer movies, Scrapbook, released in 2000 and introducing viewers to frequent Wicked Pixel leading lady Emily Haack, the Severed Head Network short films compilations, and the chilling psychological horror outing Deadwood Park in 2007.

Free Screening: Tucker and Dale vs. Evil [Free Movie Tickets]

Horror Yearbook is giving away free passes to a screening of Tucker & Dale VS Evil on September 27 at the Landmark Lumiere Theater in San Francisco, CA.

The Women of Killer Eye 2

When I think of David DeCoteau I think of shirtless men not women, but Charles Band has made the sequel to Killer Eye all about the ladies. I don’t know who any of these actresses are since Band didn’t tag them on Facebook, and there is no IMDB page for me to base an educated guess on. If you know their names please leave a comment.
