Movie Review: Halloweenight (2009)

HALLOWEENIGHT (2009 Directed by Mark Polonia)

Halloweenight, the latest creation from Polonia Brothers Entertainment, marks the first movie done by the company without the help of John Polonia, the twin brother and other half of PBE who passed away suddenly in February of 2008. Based on a story and a concept for a feature film John had written years earlier, Mark Polonia takes on the job of bringing his late brother’s old story to life with the help of a cast of old Polonia Bros. movie regulars (like Todd Carpenter, Cindy Wheeler, Bob Dennis, Dave Fife, Ken VanSant, etc.) and with the monster and gore making prestige of make-up effects artist Brett Piper (Screaming Dead, Bacterium, etc.).

Halloweenight tells the story of an old school janitor (Carpenter) who is being hassled by a group of party-going, adventure-seeking thugs (Dennis, Fife, and VanSant) on the eve of All Saint’s Day. Fed up with their shenanigans, the janitor uses voodoo practice to bring to life a scarecrow creature to exact revenge on them. When the gang settles in with their girlfriends (including Wheeler and Danielle Donahue from Ryan Cavalline’s Aspiring Psychopath) and Polonia and Piper’s upcoming Muckman) bath as the house has its power dismantled and the kids begin to die in a variety of gory ways including by dismemberment, shower stabbing, axe plunged into skull, and much more. The possessed scarecrow is more than willing to carry out the plans of his master, the old janitor. Trix (Wheeler), being the heroine in the story, tries to go up against it and stop it with a dwindling number of her chainsaw fodder friends.

Actress Zelda Rubinstein Heads Towards the Light

According to RadarOnline.com actress Zelda Rubinstein has been taken off life support at the Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles — where she has been for over a month after her lungs and kidneys failed.

A friend of Zelda’s told the website “It’s only a matter of time now – she doesn’t have long to live.”

The four-foot tall actress will always be known to horror fans as “Tangina” from the Poltergeist films (and one of the few survivors of the “Poltergeist Curse.” Craig T. Nelson you’re sooo next!), and for her appearance (one of her last) in Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.

Top Grossing Horror Films of 2009

With 2010 right around the corner it is time to wrap up all of our year end coverage and start preparing for another great year. Below is the top ten grossing horror films of 2009. Of course the biggest success story was Paranormal Activity and the biggest failures were Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 and perhaps Saw VI. I left New Moon off the list because it isn’t a horror film, but I did post its number in case you would like to see the insane spending power of teenage girls and overweight middle-aged housewives.

Also be sure to check out our other end of the year features like; HYB’s Top Ten Horror Movies of 2009, Hottest Horror Babe of 2009 and the Best Horror Bitch of the Year.

Have a great New Year!

Contest: Win a Paranormal Activity Scare Kit

Written and directed by Oren Peli, the intense and chilling story follows a young, middle-class couple who become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic, but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially while they sleep. The DVD and two-disc Blu-ray include the original theatrical version of the film, plus an unrated version with a shocking alternate ending not seen in theaters. The Blu-ray also includes a digital copy of the theatrical version.

It Came From The Mailbox: Gun Town!

Y’all best put on your shitkickers! It’s time to take a twisted trip back to old west with Lee Vervoort’s GUN TOWN. The town in question is a backwoods tourist attraction that promises travelers a taste of the wild west. Back in 1979, an unfortunate accident involving alcohol causes the proprietor and sheriff of Gun Town – Frank Bailey, to snap and kill one of the tourists. Frank is later declared insane and serves 30 years in a mental institution. Things go from bad to worse for Frank when a fire breaks out at the asylum and leaves his face and body horribly burned.

Top Horror Bitch of the Year

What would a slasher movie be without it’s requisite bitch? For every virginal good girl there must be her opposite number, the yin to her yang. In recent years many under-qualified nouveau 90210 wannabes have attempted to make a name for themselves in the pantheon of horror bad girls by flatly delivering lines in Valley Girl-esque tones and stomping around in stiletto heels. They have tried to place their names beside such luminaries as Wendy in Prom Night, Barb in the original Black Christmas, and Gail Weathers in Scream. They have tried, and they have failed. Miserably. This year there was one actress who took an overstuffed, convoluted, who-dunnit mess of a remake and it worth the price of admission. She came , she saw, and she stole the movie from the bland final girl the way only a good bitch can. Her name is Leah Pipes, also known as Jessica from Sorority Row.

2009 Hottest Horror Babe: Diora Baird

We let you choose our 2009 Hottest Horror Babe and you awarded the honor to hotty Diora Baird. Although Baird did not really appear in a horror movie in 2009 — lets be honest Stan Helsing shouldn’t have counted — she star in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006), and is in the upcoming Night of the Demons remake and 30 Days of Night: Dark Days in 2010.

Baird beat out Sophie Monk, Amber Heard, Danielle Panabaker, Audrina Patridge, Bobbi Sue Luther, Caroline D’Amore, Krista Allen, Odette Yustman and Megan Fox.

Baird is going to be busy in 2010 with at least six movies releasing, including the comedy Last Call, and hopefully we will see more of her in a few horror flicks in the near future!

HYB’s Top Ten Horror Movies of 2009

There were a lot of great films in 2009 but unfortunately most of them did not come from the horror genre. I feel like most of my year was wasted watching bad 3D gimmicks (The Final Destination), boring and uncreative remakes (Friday the 13th) and comedies disguised as horror films (Jennifer’s Body)… Even the films that made our list barely elicit any kind of excitement from me; while entertaining Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell felt lost in the Summer movie season, and Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat didn’t seem like is was worth the very long wait. Paranormal Activity just gave me Blair Witch Déjà vu and unfortunately I managed to miss Zombieland in theaters.

It Came From The Mailbox: The Riverman

Gory greetings! Welcome to another exciting edition of IT CAME FROM THE MAILBOX, a column where your old pal Brain Hammer reviews whatever random crap the good folks at horroryearbook decide to throw my way.

THE RIVERMAN is a film based on real life events that were recounted in the best selling book The Riverman: Ted Bundy and I Hunt for the Green River Killer, co-written by Robert Keppel. Keppel is a former criminal investigator who worked both the Bundy and Green River Killer cases. The film takes place in 1982 and highlights a frustrated young detective named Dave Reichert who draws the unfortunate assignment of working Seattle’s Green River murder case. Reichert turns to retired Keppel for help, and Keppel hesitatingly agrees. Things get interesting when Keppel receives a letter from non other than Ted Bundy himself, offering to help out with the investigation. Keppel then begins a series of taped interviews with Bundy that eventually lead to Bundy’s breakdown and confession to eight previously unsolved murders.
