“Poultrygeist is as savage as Dawn of the Dead, as slapstick nutzoid as Evil Dead 2, as gag-on-your-popcorn gross as Pink Flamingos, and as dementedly foulmouthed literate as a Kevin Smith raunchfest. It’s genuine sick fun, and there isn’t a boring moment in it.”
This is old news because the newer issue of Entertainment Weekly should be on shelves today, but I thought it was worth mentioning because EW’s horror reviews are normally not that friendly. Owen Gleiberman (the lesser of two evils in EW’s film criticism) gave Lloyd Kaufman’s Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead a great review (Read entire review here).
I caught this just days after our look at the state of the independent horror market and this is a real positive for horror fans. Hopefully Troma will release Poultrygeist on DVD soon, so everybody will have a chance to finally see it.
“The Strangers” is an absurdly inappropriate title for this film, a more apt name for this flick would have been “The Familiars.” There is not one original moment or scene in the entire ninety minute running time of “The Strangers.” Its basic concept is a complete rip off of the imported horror films, “Funny Games” and “Them.” Perhaps first time writer/director Bryan Bertino thought that the other films foreign origins would allow him to release this movie that borders upon plagiarism with little notice. Sure maybe only the horror fans that have an interest in internationally released flicks would notice, but the correlation between the movies isn’t the only familiar thing about it. “The Strangers” not only creates it’s foundation out of a mixture of the aforementioned Austrian and French films but goes on to build the rest of it’s script out of eternally lamented horror movie clichés. Characters make decisions that even a seven year old would scoff at, uses the “Based on A True Story” tagline even though it’s not, the couple that is terrorized has just broken up, etc. So far, “The Strangers” is the worst horror film I’ve seen in 2008.
Horror Yearbook has been taking a second look at the Women in Prison genre in our The Lost Art of Women in Prison Filmmaking section, but we never thought we would ever see it on TV.
Robert Rodriguez is shopping around a television show called Women In Chains. Horrormovies.ca reports that the series will feature; “”Sadistic Guards, Cafeteria Hosedowns, Mud Wrestling, and Violent Vendettas,” and that Rose McGowan will star.
The Amityville Horror (1979) has spawned 7 sequels and one remake, so Horror Yearbook has decided to bring you The Women of Amityville Naked one-by-one. We begin with the original Amityville and Lois Lane herself Margot Kidder, who played Kathy Lutz in Stuart Rosenberg’s film that started it all.
Over 18 only check out Margot Kidder in the buff here! Everyone else tell us your favorite Amityville sequel here.

It seems like every year, after a few consecutive horror flops in theaters, someone declares the horror genre dead. Last year it was the N.Y. Times. I hate to be the one to do it this year, but with Lloyd Kaufman claiming his company Troma is struggling, and the news of New Line and Tartan Extreme going broke, it does make one wonder if the small horror world is in trouble. Meanwhile, the Hollywood remake machine is still raking in the dollars and with franchises like Saw still pulling their weight, we know that the horror genre itself as a whole is not struggling. So this is not Horror Yearbook declaring the genre dead, but we are simply wondering if the independent market has been suffering from too many distribution companies flooding us with garbage.

I was drunk on a lot of wine and somehow stumbled over a movie called The Pig People. I may have ignored it until I recognized some fat kid in the trailer (Watch Here), and had to figure out who it was. After a little digging it turns out it was, Daeg Faerch the kid who played young Michael Myers in Rob Zombie’s Halloween. It also stars Lil’ Romeo, Master P and Nicole Andrews (who is also in a horror/comedy called Penthouse), and that is all I got. The movie is slated for a 2009 release and it is about; Five college film students enter a haunted forest and shoot a documentary about the half-human, half-pig creatures known as the Pig People.

Viral marketing is not my thing. I am too lazy to screw around with it, but it looks like a new viral campaign has started about something called Blood Copy. So what is it? According to this Blog, it is for a new vampire show on HBO called True Blood. The show itself is really not a big secret, HBO announced they would be picking it up way back in 2007. Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) is directing it, it stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, and it is about “Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid living in Louisianna who can read people’s minds.

Maybe the Holy Grail of horror VHS boxes, many fans have tried and failed to find a Dead Pit cover where the damn eyes actually lit up. No word on if Code Red’s DVD release of Dead Pit will feature light-up eyes, but it is full of special features and will be available on June 17th, 2008 for the first time ever on DVD.

Abominable was a pleasant surprise from 2006. If you didn’t see it or saw it on the Sci-Fi channel censored, you should hurry and watch it now, because they are talking sequel. Director Ryan Schifrin announced that Jeffrey Combs’ character will be coming back in Abominable 2:

I know we published news on a new movie in development called Pig Hunt way back in 2007, well it seems there has been a little Piggy mania lately, with the release of some nude posters and a very graphic (NSFW) trailer. Fangoria got their hands on the naked poster, but the losers censored it (see censored version after the jump and yes I am working on getting the uncensored version). You can also check out the official website here.
Storm is a film that mixes matrix style with dramatically intense instances in the life of our main character. Running away from the past is a huge basis for the film, which becomes a journey in facing this. This action won’t just affect one, but all of man kind. Storm uses these memories, forced to be relived again as well as these seemingly immortal and powerful figures, each fighting a different unknown side to us, to simply find and acknowledge truth.
I like to think that I’m a pretty astute movie watcher. Even the most convoluted plots tend to make sense if you watch them intently enough. That is not the case when a movie is just plain shitty. When the story is secondary to say, gore, you had better ba-ring it (imagine me saying that with my pointer finger waving around and my neck making a circle with my head)!
