5 Days of Steve Niles: Day 5 - 30 Days of Night Comic Spotlight

COMIC BOOK SPOTLIGHT – 30 DAYS OF NIGHT

Our last day ends on 30 Days of Night, the graphic novel that has spawned many sequels, a short film series, and the major motion picture. This is Steve Niles most successful piece of literature, and has set the new standard in telling the tale of the vampire. Special Thanks to Steve Niles, IDW Publishing, and Dark Horse Comics for their help in bringing this Horror Yearbook special, 5 Days of Steve Niles, to life. And now for our Comic Book Spotlight: The world as we know it has changed. Vampires are no longer hiding underground thanks to a book written about them. Humanity is on the brink of being swallowed into the shadows as the feeders of flesh make their presence known in a small town known as Barrow, Alaska. Hope is now a dream and the day falls short as a savior. Welcome to the longest of nights…

Stabbing at Signal Screening

Two men were stabbed at a screening of the horror film The Signal. USA Today reports: “An unknown man had started stabbing at the theater seat and then he stabbed the victim. As he fled, he stabbed another victim sitting near the exit.”

Splatter Movie: The Director’s Cut (2008) Movie Review

Splatter Movie: The Directors Cut is a mockumentary horror film. Taking place on the set of a horror film, it reminds me of Return to Horror High in terms of how the story progresses. The scares that they are trying to get out of their audience come to be to true in a film shooting that many of them might not make it out alive of. In this case, no one really suspects anything until close to the end.

Kim Harrison’s The Outlaw Demon Wails

I have never read anything by Kim Harrison but for anyone who may trip over this and didn’t know that, The Outlaw Demon Wails the sixth book of the Hollows series has hit bookshelves, well… now you know, and you can’t say we didn’t tell you. Consider it a free PSA for part of my women sensitivity training (don’t ask!).

5 Days of Steve Niles: Day 3 - Criminal Macabre Book/Comic Review

Day 3. After 30 Days of Night, Steve Niles had an itch he needed to scratch. That itch had a name, and it was Cal McDonald, and ever since then, Steve has been itching Cal like a bad case of chicken pox. Guy needs to see a doctor, right? Nope. Criminal Macabre features Cal McDonald in a series of supernatural detective stories, trying to figure out why every ghoul, ghost, vampire, and evil monster wants to mess around with humanity. It’s a hard job, and Cal appears to struggle throughout, handling a nice drug addiction, countless beatings, and defining the term “alcoholic” to new heights. Or maybe depths? I don’t know. What I do know is Steve Niles has a muse, and Cal McDonald is his name. Welcome to Criminal Macabre.

The vision is of an old woman being buried in a wall of a home after she is killed. She doesn’t think much of it until the arrives at her husband’s villa which she plans to redecorate as a surprise while he is gone. When she arrives and looks around she begins to see objects in one of the rooms that was in her vision.

Big thanks to everyone who has read my demented ramblings in the past 29 columns and kept coming back for more. The highlight of PFTC for me so far has to be the time that none other than Herschell Gordon Lewis himself called my review of “Blood Feast” “remarkable and astute.” I’m still patting myself on the back over that one!

The Signal (2008) Movie Review

The Signal nods its crazy cap to, but it definitely is one of the most memorable, if not, entertaining horror films since Evil Dead 2. But that’s what makes it complete. There’s something here for every type of horror film fanatic; whether it be outrageous and bloody like Evil Dead 2, intriguing and apocalyptic like 28 Days Later, funny like Shaun of the Dead, gritty and torturous like Reservoir Dogs, and just a zany mix of it all a la Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste with a Quentin Tarantino Pulp Fiction format. Oh, and Grindhouse transitions.
