Well, in the traditional of remake news, I have to announce that David Cronenberg’s “Scanners” is getting the ol’ once over now. And this may or may not be good news. Remakes have been annoying us for quite a while now, but the director that has signed on to do the dirty deed is none other than Britney Spears. Just kidding. She is a little busy at the moment, so they got Darren Lynn Bousman to fill her shoes. You may remember Bousman as the director of “Saw II & III”. Oh and some other dude named David Goyer is writing the script. And he wrote “Batman Begins”, which is a little flick you probably never heard of, but should check out.
And in case you never heard of “Scanners”, it was a 1981 classic Sci-Fi movie by the always entertaining David Cronenberg. It is set in the future when a race of Scanners exist with psychic powers that can inflict damage on others. The most powerful Scanner is played by a kooky Michael Ironside that is hell-bent on world domination. But when a doctor trying to save the world finds one of the remaining Scanners, it’s party time! Oh, I mean there is a big ass fight at the end. The film also features a great head explosion and facial meltdown.

Ever since I first saw the film “Getting Lucky,” about a high school student who finds a leprechaun in a beer bottle, I have been obsessed with director/writer/composer Michael Paul Girard. So it was a pleasant surprise when Michael found me through Horror Yearbook, and a sure sign that all my hard work had paid off. It is also a true honor to be able to bring Michael Paul Girard back into the spotlight where he so deserves to be.

Taking advantage of the bleak exteriors provided by the east coast winter, several Atlantic-side indie filmmakers are hard at work to bring you the thrills you crave. In Roanoke Va., writer/director John Birmingham is bringing to life a splattery vampire comedy called “The Vampires Of Zanzibar” (formerly “Sex, Blood and Chocolate”).

“We regret that this had to be a mini-LP, but Andy was involved in an unfortunate accident and was unable to go into the studio with us to record additional tracks. Fortunately, he is making a full recovery and will be able to record a full length album for 1992. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and family of Lisa Thompson who was not as fortunate and Andy. We should all recognize the frailty of life and fight to preserve it, not destroy it”

Apparently the number twenty-three is in everything. So are Nutra-Sweet and cilantro, but we don’t see movies about them, now do we?
But while THE ABANDONED is as unbelievable as Britney Spears showing up at a PTA meeting, I can’t really be angry with it. Sure the script may seem like it’s written by the especially poo-flingy monkey at the zoo, but its set design, cinematography, makeup and editing faculties are second to none.
