It’s hard not being a hypochondriac when doctors have been telling you that you’re going to die from an pulmonary embolism for over 12 years. That’s why I decided to pullout of our Ti West / Sara Paxton interview when I started having chest pains in Penn Station. Fortunately, Madeleine Koestner was there to cover for me and that’s why we have this shitty text interview instead of video.
That’s also why she posted half of it on her website YouWonCannes. Here’s part one where Ti is joined by the lead actress, blonde hottie Sara Paxton, to talk about his new film The Innkeepers and why he still hates Cabin Fever 2. — Wil Keiper
HORROR YEARBOOK: How’s The Innkeepers doing?
TI WEST: So far so good. Theatrically it comes out February 3rd. You know, indie movies these days, theatrically it’s like blleehh. It’s just not a great time, so you can only do so much. The VOD started a few days ago, certainly the last year of festivals we’ve been really fortunate with reviews. Since the VOD release we’ve still been fortunate with reviews. And I think the overall reaction from just gauging websites and twitter is kind of astoundingly positive. So hopefully that continues.

Greg Lamberson and Emil Novak, co-founders of The Buffalo Screams Film Festival are definitely on their way to mastering the formula. They’ve put together a program highlighting local films, national films, and international films, of all shapes and sizes. The venue is a great choice, a perfectly sized independent theater called The Screening Room. Another great thing about Buffalo Screams is the audience, many of whom are filmmakers themselves, whether or not they have work screening in the festival.
Our buddy Peter Podgursky and Donna Thorland’s new short film, The Night Caller, just premiered at Screamfest 2011 in Los Angeles. It’s available online. Watch it right now. It’s good, do it.

There’s something eerie going on in Buffalo. And this Halloween, it’s the place to be. Not only is it a haven for massive, elaborate haunted houses, the past few years the horror film community has been nothing short of booming. Last year HYB attended the first annual Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival, and came back [...]

The Human Centipede was a disgusting piece of cinema. The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) is, believe or not, more depraved than its precursor. In celebration of the UK ban of the film being lifted, despite a couple of minutes being cut, we’re posting this interview we did with the director and star of the movie, Tom Six and Laurence R. Harvey.

We’ve got another entry in the October run of genre festivals, The Everybody Dies Horror Film Fest in Orange County, CA. This one goes for a sweet, short two days from October 21st to the 22nd. It looks like a nice smattering of slick short films with a few features thrown in the mix. This could be a really fun little event.

For those of you keeping score of HYB’s daily Shriekfest round up, three very different films impressed us.

Over the course of the Shriekfest International Horror Sci Fi festival this writer has watched puppies being chewed up, mutant babies ripped from wombs, a man’s head cleaved in half, an elderly couple chain-sawed to pieces, and alt rock musical numbers. Even after all that, nothing has left me as upset as the climatic image of the festival’s final film did: a single sneaker left in the middle of the street.
A couple years ago on a Wednesday morning, I sat down in a tiny, almost empty theater, on the highest floor of the IFC Center in New York City. I was there to have an experience I had been looking forward to for months, after relishing in the promo images, the rants of sickened critics, and most of all, the online film community’s obsession with the mad scientist who stitches his victims ass to mouth.

The second night of the Shriekfest 2011 International Horror Sci-Fi film festival offered an eclectic mix of zombies, subterranean pet munching monsters, motorcycle helmeted psychopaths, mobsters, rape and the occasional musical number. Kudos to festival organizer Denise Gossett and staff for programming such a diverse night of genre fun.

The opening night of Shriekfest screenings happened to coincide with the first Los Angeles rainfall of the season. That didn’t dampen the excitement for the fans who filled The Chaplin Screening Room at Raleigh Studious in Hollywood.

The 2011 Shriekfest International Horror and Science fiction festival kicked off last night with its opening night party hosted at the B52 Club in Hollywood. Festival founder Denise Gossett and the festival staff threw a great party for the indie Horror film community, giving fans a chance to mingle with the filmmakers.
Back in 2009, there was a low budget flick about living, sentient, killer cars called Hybrid , directed by the french guy who made the One Missed Call remake (oof). It was later post-converted to 3-D and I actually caught about 10 minutes of it when it played at last year’s 3-D Film Festival in Los Angeles. It was very strange, but I recall laughing quite a bit at the absurdity of it. Now, or, on August 23rd, Hybrid is getting a DVD release! Good for it.
