Fans of George A. Romero’s classic DAWN OF THE DEAD might not recognize the name Jim Krut but they would immediately recognize his face. Well, perhaps not his face as much as everything slightly above his eyebrows, all of which was memorably torn away by the whirring blades of the WGON helicopter! That’s right, Jim Krut is none other than the uncredited actor now well known to hardcore horror fans as the helicopter zombie!
Gory greetings! Welcome to a very special edition of Brain Hammer’s PICKS FROM THE CRYPT. This week’s PICKS are a terrible trio of cult classic 80’s exploitation flicks from the notorious Spanish writer, producer, and director Juan Piquer Simon. Juan grew up raised on a diet of classic American cinema in his native Spain and considers himself an adamant fan of fantasy, thriller and horror films. Juan Piquer Simon’s efforts are infamous for being so bad, that they’re actually good. Simon has even been called the Spanish answer to Ed Wood.
I’m a huge fan of his flicks, especially the ones featured in this column. Something about the horrible dubbing, the incoherent editing, the incomprehensible plots, the tacky synthesized music; it all adds up to create pure movie magic! For all of their many, many faults, Simon’s flicks are hysterically funny and entertaining as Hell. They also deliver the goods in the splatter and sleaze departments, with plenty of scenes of flesh ripping ferocity. In honor of the one and only Juan Piquer Simon, LET THE BLOODSHED BEGIN!!!

Gory greetings! This latest edition of PICKS FROM THE CRYPT features a terrible trio of cult classic 80’s horror flicks that boldly go where Ridley Scott had already went in ‘79. I’m talking OUTER SPACE baby! Well, not really outer space because that would cost too much money. In these flicks the ghastly alien horrors of outer space come to Earth and wreck havoc on humanity. LET THE CHEST BURSTING BLOODSHED BEGIN!!!

Gory greetings horroryearbook alumni! Welcome to the second (and possibly last) edition of IT CAME FROM THE MAILBOX, a new and exciting column where your old pal Brain Hammer reviews whatever random crap the good folks at horroryearbook decide to send my way.
It took several months of intensive therapy to recover from the negative effects of the last IT CAME FROM THE MAILBOX double feature. After I sent a few letters to Molly written in crayon assuring her that I was ok again she hesitatingly agreed to send me a few more flicks to review. Then the post office intervened and tucked the package up their anus for a few weeks before finally deciding to dump it in my mailbox. Breathless with anticipation, I tore open the envelope and much to my delight I discovered a cannibalism themed double feature lurking inside. Let’s dig in!
Actor and entertainer Rex Sikes is best known to hardcore horror fans for starring as the ill fated Rodney in the cult classic 1976 exploitation favorite MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH. I recently had the chance to ask Rex all about the filming of MASSACRE, his memories of the cast, his opinion of the film, and what he’s been up to lately. LET THE BLOODSHED BEGIN!!!

The good folks at horroryearbook were nice enough to send me a copy of “Storm Warning” to review. Normally I don’t write negative reviews because I don’t like to waste my time writing about a movie I didn’t enjoy. This puts me in a tough place, because I thought “Storm Warning” was just that - a big waste of time.

These three flicks are often overlooked when discussing 80’s horror for some reason, and all three are personal favorites of mine. Best of all, all three of these horror classics are available on dvd and can be easily found for a reasonable price. LET THE BLOODSHED BEGIN!!!
