The Horror Homo: Fraternity Massacre at Hell Island (2010)

As a gay horror fanatic, I personally don’t see any need to have a “gay horror” subgenre. But I guess there are other mo’s out there that wanna see twinks parading around in jock-straps rather the usual buxom horror beauties. I’m sure that most horror-heads out there have heard of, if not seen, a David Decoteau film. While it seems to be the consensus that his film’s are usually horrible, no one can argue that he is primarily responsible for the Homoerotic Horror subgenre. Most of these fims are tamer, sexual wise, than most would expect, although there are exceptions, like Cannibal or Otto: Or Up With Dead People. I suppose only the most open-minded horror-head would actually venture to watch one of these films. So now you have me, The Horror Homo, to wade through the dreck. To let you know which ones are actually watchable, which ones are safe for straight viewing, and which ones make you want to bust out the assless chaps!

That brings us to “Fraternity Massacre At Hell Island“, from Arizetical Entertainment. Although this is being marketed as a “gay horror film”, I didn’t see that much that seperated it from the usual DTV horror trash. I mean sure, there are gay frat boys running for their lives, but outside of one post-coital embrace, and a few kisses, the gay action is nil. The acting is just above porno standards, and I kept wondering if a few of these twinks didn’t make their money that way? For the straight boys, there is one titty shot in the shower, although the owner of said glands, was not the easiest on the eyes. The gore is almost non-existant, and exists mainly of stabbing shots, with very minimal blood.

The boys at Zeta Alpha Rho are in the middle of Pledge Week, and Hell Night is bearing down on them. There are a few straight guys, but it seems that many of the brothers are on the “down-lo”. We learn that aside from frolicking with each other, they have devious plans of making their pledges spend the night on Hell Island. The exact spot where in 1984, a band of “patriotic performers(???)” had a gypsy curse placed on them. They are doomed to remain on the island forever and perform their show, unless they can trick others until taking their places. Oh, and all of this has to be done under the full moon. Sound confusing, it definitely is. We also have a serial killer in an awful clown costume stalking the frat boys.

The red herrings are introduced at such a rapid pace, it’s hard to keep up with the actual characters. We have Johnny Brooklyn (what a great serial killer name), an old frat-brother who went crazy the previous year, and now has escaped from the mental institution. We have the Dean Of Students, who owes more than a passing nod to Norman Bates, with his nonsensical mutterings about “Mother”. Let’s not forget about the patriotic ghosts, there is just too much nonsense in this film to contend with. The ending, with it’s promise of an all-gay fraternity, holds more promise than the entire film that preceeded it. Had the producers actually bothered to have a real script (c’mon Fratback Mountain), and spent more than $30.00 on the Special Effects budget, it might’ve been a welcome addition to “passable DTV Horror club”, but as it stands, I just couldn’t recommend this one to anyone (gay or straight).

What a great idea for a column. There are many gay themed slashers, more than we’d probably care to admit to! So I’m glad Mitch is taking one for the team, and yes that was meant to sound dirty!

Well, since there was little nudity, no actual plot, an indecipherable gore-terror-horror treat (oh, I am terrified that I am going to be singing bad show-tunes for eternity) & little gaiety it sounds like a fag-bashing movie to me. And that is the only thing that sounds remotely horrible to me. Thanks for giving me the heads up…now I don’t have to see this movie.
