Hypochondriac (2009 Directed by Pete Jacelone)

The creators of Sculpture bring us Hypochondriac, a short horror comedy to be included in the upcoming horror anthology Psycho Street.

Hypochondriac stars Marv Blauvelt (Beef, Sculpture, The Green Monster, etc.) as Dr. Oliver Combs, a big city doctor who has moved from LA to a small town called Kronanburg (LOL!) to practice medicine at a small clinic. Hoping his start at the clinic will be a major departure from the crazy environment of the big city, he soon finds that not everyone who works and comes to the clinic is as normal as he hoped. Combs is a big-time germophobe who carries a small spray bottle of hand sanitizer everywhere he goes spraying it on anything that may have the slightest trace of germs or bacteria. Starting at the clinic he meets up with Dr. Fixx (Carl Burrows) who’s an alcoholic who can’t concentrate on his work unless he’s all boozed up and Nurse Amber Lovejoy (Raine Brown of 100 Tears, Sculpture, Game Over, Braincell, etc.) who used to work as an exotic dancer. Combs and Nurse Lovejoy meet up with several wacky patients and some patients who appear mentally stable and normal.

The craziest patient they end up dealing with is Charity Betencort (Alan Rowe Kelly of The Blood Shed, A Far Cry from Home, Vindication, Experiment 7, etc.), a woman with a rash of medical issues in which she tries to remedy them herself without seeking help from a physician. The methods in which she tries to fix her problems turn out to be very messy in the end. On top of that, Combs and the clinic also end up dealing with a crazy redneck lady (Susan Adriensen of Prison of the Psychotic Damned, The Blood Shed, Under the Raven’s Wing, Sculpture, etc.) who believes she’s pregnant with an alien baby. Can Combs survive the madness that is the new clinic in Kronanburg he’s started at? You may need a second opinion, as the film’s tagline suggests!

Hypochondriac is a very well scripted short (written by Trevor Wright from a story by Blauvelt) that is also well photographed by Bryan Roberts and Nolan Ball and features some decent make-up effects by Stephen R. Hicks. Blauvelt delivers a funny performance as the germ freak Dr. Combs, Brown is delightful as Nurse Lovejoy, and Kelly as Betencort is the highlight of the show. Also starring is Zoe Daelman Chlanda (I’ll Bury You Tomorrow, The Blood Shed, Vindication, Insatiable, Contact, etc.), David Gilkey (Sculpture), Edward X. Young (The Green Monster), and Jeremy Mulkey (Sculpture).

Hypochondriac is a prime example of camp horror at its finest. For a short black comedy, it manages to be very entertaining, morbid, and comical during its duration. It also contains somewhat of a social message on how most people today think all the crazies in the world can be found in the big city when in fact you can an array of weird folks if you search the small backwoods areas. Definitely a must see if you think you come from a weird family. But then again, what normal person hasn’t thought that at one time or another?
