Either the Saw franchise lost fans over the course of too many sequels, or the draw of the marketing hype created for Paranormal Activity was too hard to resist for movie goers this weekend. Either way the little horror film that could raked in an estimated $22 million, and Lionsgate’s once mighty franchise faltered with an estimated $14.8 million at the box office.
Paranormal Activity’s long theater journey from small film to its jump up to approximately 2,500 screens this Friday, has earned it a total of $62.5 million in 31 days. Putting it on pace to become one of the more successful horror movies in history.
Things are also not looking bright for Saw VI’s future with Paranormal’s competition and Dimension’s plan to re-release Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 in theaters on this upcoming Halloween weekend. Although I doubt any of this this spells doom for the already planned Saw 7, it may be the first signs of the end of the Saw franchise.

I’m very surprised by this. I heard the movie wasn’t very scary at all. Maybe I’ll read some reviews instead of relying on my jaded friends opinions.
As a Saw fan–you may have won for now, but Saw VII will beat PA 2 financially.
