Echo Bridge Entertainment’s newest “zomedy” is, unfortunately, not as funny as it thinks it is. Last of the Living is Shaun of the Dead meets Napoleon Dynamite that follows three survivors of a zombie apocalypse. The slackers Morgan, Ash and Johnny spend their days drinking beer and watching movies in various abandoned mansions, until they stumble upon a woman who may have the cure for the flesh-eating outbreak. The three friends must then decide if they would rather risk their lives to save the human race or continue with their new found lives of doing nothing.
Last of the Living did slowly grow on me, but the novelty managed to wear off towards the end, making it just the newest Shaun of the Dead wannabe. While it is not an awful zombie flick, it offers nothing new to the sub genre and is just another bland entry into an already watered down direct-to-DVD market.
It does offer enough zombie smashing action and a few giggles that probably make it worth a look for die hard zombie fans, but if you’re looking for a fresh take on the zombie genre, I would not recommend Last of the Living. Stick with the classics or Marcel Sarmiento’s Deadgirl if you haven’t already seen it.
