Nick and his friends go to a racetrack for an afternoon of high velocity thrills. The day of fun turns deadly in an instant when a horrible crash causes burning wreckage to fly into the crowd, killing several people. Only moments before the deadly crash, Nick has a strange premonition that shows him in graphic detail exactly who will be dying and how. In a panic, Nick manages to drag his friends and a few other random people who get caught in the fray out of the stadium just before all Hell breaks loose.
The horrified survivors think that the worst is behind them but they are wrong…DEAD wrong. Death doesn’t like being cheated, and decides to take out the people who escaped their destiny in the accident in a variety of spectacularly gruesome ways. Seemingly innocent daily activities such as crossing the street, getting a haircut, or taking a swim all turn deadly. As the body count rises, Nick discovers the secrets of Death’s design and tries to stop the cycle of carnage once and for all.
Does that synopsis sound familiar or what? I knew in advance that this was going to be a short review. If you are a fan of the Final Destination series like I am, you have already seen this movie three times before. The only thing that has changed are the deaths and the fact that the film is 3D. The entire movie from start to finish is exactly what you would expect going in. You get a big nasty accident that one person foresees and several others survive. There’s a selection of pretty girls and a couple of pricks for body count fodder. Johnny Psychic and his cute girlfriend (who sports some sweet green panties and sexy short shorts!) do some online research and get hip to the whole “pattern of death” thing. Then they run around trying to save the other survivors and watch everybody get turned into mincemeat.
The only real difference this time around is the fact that the 3D makes THE FINAL DESTINATION a lot more fun to watch. I thought the 3D effects in this movie were fantastic. The whole movie plays out about an inch from your face and some of the death scenes were really intense. I ducked at least once during the opening scene! On the downside, I thought some of the CG effects were a bit cheaper looking than normal. There were some fires and explosions that looked like cartoons. A few of the deaths in the opening set piece seemed a bit truncated as well, I’m guessing there will be an “unrated version I couldn’t see in theaters” on dvd. Hopefully that unrated dvd will also have some more nudity in it. I thought this flick was a bit tame in that department as well. Those are minor complaints though. The death scenes are the stars of the show, and in that regard I thought this new entry lived up to the gory legacy of its’ predecessors.
The opening race car holocaust is a blast of good gory fun, especially when seen in 3D with the cars running over your face. It doesn’t quite live up to the brutality of the car carnage seen in Final Destination 2, but I thought it was a better set up than the roller coaster scene in part 3. I was excited to see that writer Eric Bress and director David R. Ellis were both returning for this entry because I thought that FD2 had the best deaths and was the most fun flick in the series. I don’t want to spoil the rest of the death scenes here, because that really is the only reason to go see this thing, but I will say that there are a few that stand out as being fairly brutal and others that leave more to the imagination. Try to avoid tv ads and trailers that show you all the good stuff and see this one ready to be surprised.
Does THE FINAL DESTINATION end the series on a high note? Well, if this really is the last we see of the franchise I would have to say that it does. However, I’m sure if this flick does well at the box office another sequel is entirely possible. I thought this was a worthy sequel and another solid entry in the series. I never go into a Final Destination film with high expectations and that’s probably why I haven’t been disappointed yet. This shouldn’t be confused with horror that takes itself too seriously and requires a lot of heavy thought to be enjoyed. It’s a thrill ride where small details like acting and logic take a backseat and splatter gets a chance to shine in the spotlight. I thought this flick was a lot of fun and I have to recommend seeing it in the theater to get the full effects. It won’t be nearly as much fun on dvd with the crappy red and blue glasses that give you a headache!
KEEP THE BLOOD AND DEATH FLOWING!!!
