Platinum Dunes Making Horror Movies For the Fans

The remake argument is a moot point, a waste of time, especially when it comes to Platinum Dunes’ remakes. If you’re still asking the question “why do they do it?”, the answer is money, so stop asking and move on. However, that doesn’t mean we have to continue being insulted by Platinum Dunes, who still feels the need to play the fan angle. If they were really listening to the horror fans, they probably wouldn’t be remaking these movies at all. Instead they’re listening to the dollar of the Saturday Night Dead, the same people who made Paul Blart Mall Cop the biggest hit of 2009. People who will see almost anything, especially when it’s manufactured to be “cool” like Dunes’ remakes are.

We also know over-obsessed fandom and the internet can ruin a film or TV show. If the creators of Battlestar Galactica had listened to fans of the original, we would have never received one of the best Sci-Fi television series to date. Heroes caved to public opinion which resulted in the decline of a promising show , and ultimately their ratings. However, this does not mean we need patronizing blogs posted on Bloody-Disgusting to remind us that there is nothing we can do to stop the Dunes’ remake machine. Perhaps Brad Fuller should ask himself why he feels the need to keep defending his movies on his Bloody-Disgusting blog.

The Platinum Dunes’ propaganda has gotten so bad that it is absolutely insulting. Their hands are so far up the ass of Mr. Disgusting that he could star in Spooky Dan’s next horror puppet movie. Meanwhile any horror website that would like to survive needs to jump at any crumb Platinum Dunes throws their way. There is no stopping the propaganda machine, and in some ways there is nothing wrong with it. All film companies market their films to the best of their ability, and sometimes the marketing is just as much fun as watching the film. However, that doesn’t mean we need the pile of bull Dunes’ likes to serve us on the side.

When Platinum Dunes starts to rev up their Elm Street machine, I would like to ask them why they won’t spare us some of the theatrics? When you’re handing out your golden tickets for set visits invite someone not so easily impressed. People like Uncle Creepy from Dread Central will automatically love anything that involves himself. Other websites are too scared to say anything negative, and too smart to bite the hand that feeds them. If you are going to continue to think we’re stupid enough to fall for your shit, why not invite someone who has no invested interest in ad revenue or traffic? Like the fans… I’m sure there are a ton of fan sites out there who would be more than thrilled to visit the set and give their honest opinion.

I’m sure there are other cynical websites like Horror Yearbook who you could try to convert into another one of your Stepford wives. We all know that A Nightmare on Elm Street is an automatic cash cow, so what would it hurt? If you really want to prove yourself to the “fans”, stop pandering to the brown nosers who run the biggest horror websites. They are far from fans, and are out of touch with the horror community. Platinume Dunes, if you reached out to real fans who run websites, you could stop feeling “the hatred and distain of horror fans” and see how supportive they can be without paying them off and treating them like morons.

UPDATE: After a few E-mails and Twitter messages I realized that not everyone knows what I am talking about. This article is in response to Platinum Dunes’ Blog on Bloody-Disgusting.com. Here are some links for you to reference:

Brad Fuller explains why he decided to ruin his and BD’s credibility

“I have been a fan of Bloody-Disgusting for a long time. Though the site hasn’t always loved what we do at Platinum Dunes, I admire its devotion to the genre that we all love. I have spent countless hours reading comments and there have been many times when input from BD readers have had impact on our films. Being in the remake business certainly opens us up to criticism and scrutiny and we welcome that.”

Final Friday the 13th propaganda where Fuller tells us why we should love Friday the 13th.

“Friday 13 is my favorite movie of all of the movies we’ve made. Now I know you haters will have problems with things such as the pine needles being too green or that we had Jablonsky create an amazing score, but here is the fact… If you are truly a fan of horror movies, and specifically Friday the 13 movies, you need to see the new one. It’s badass. Hell yes Jason runs. You better believe his machete is huge (there are a bunch of people to kill). And the scares work.”

Moviehole rips Elm Street script

Fuller starts defending Elm Street before filming begins

“I can promise you this- every single person from the execs at New Line to the PA’s care very passionately about Nightmare on Elm Street. While we often get assaulted for simply doing this for the money, I can assure you there are easier films to make with less downside and far less scrutiny. But I come to this incredibly optimistic. Sam Bayer continues to impress me everyday with his passion for telling this story in a visual style that will blow you away. Our script gets better all the time, and things that were discussed and hated here are no longer a part of the story. I am happy to report that pod casting is gone. But part of that script evolution is due to the level of actors we have attracted. From Jackie, to Thomas, Kyle, Rooney, Kellen, Katie to Clancy we have held the highest standards to bring you the best actors. And they are all huge fans.”

I’ve had my own arguments with Fuller and his blog (not that he knew about it, but it made me feel better) and I couldn’t agree more. I think Bloody-Disgusting has given up credibility for the sake of being an insider to the Dunces’ productions, and it is frustrating to see any site that claims to be a proponent of genuine horror films embracing a production company that is so clearly manipulating classic horror films for a quick buck. Thanks for your thoughts on this, and I believe you are not only not alone, but in a clear majority (of which i count myself a member).

    Fuller is an asshole!

Your right, we know that Nightmare will make some serious freaking cash.
So why not open things up and let actual fans of the genre in? IMHO, this is a matter of the company simply wishing to reach the largest audience possible by using the most compliant writers available.

This article is totally true, thanks – people need to realize what incentives the bigger horror websites are given before they review movies.

It is the equivalent of say Fox or WB writing articles about their own films for Entertainment Weekly disguised as them responding to moviegoers concerns… Like the Producer of the film would tell us he is not too happy with the final product.

If true horror fans would ban BS sites like BD and thier ilk, and these utterly shitty films, we wouldn’t even be discussing this….would we?

I absolutely 100% agree with this article. Wil is a god amongst men!

Bloody-Disgusting are all a bunch of faggots, that after all these years still have the same crap taste in horror movies as some teenager JUST getting into the genre. So no wonder they suck the cocks of the mainstream horror filmmakers, to them that’s all that exists.

STOP REMAKING CLASSIC HORROR MOVIES YOU GREEDY NO-TALENT ASSHOLES!

Thank you for posting this. It’s good to see other people not falling for PD’s B.S.

The best thing about BD is that the site seems to suck in all the dumbass horror fans none of us want to talk to. It’s a site ran by a bro who watched Evil Dead with some dudes in college and decided he knew enough to start a horror site. Waste of fucking space.

There are a few reboots and remakes that have worked very well.
Yet with some of the horror ones, they seem to miss the mark more the others.
I am not sure there needs to be a Elm Street reboot, I would rather see something new, but I know that is a tired statement.
The first Elm Street still scares after all these years and I liked New Nightmare a lot.
It is a shame that some of these websites do not have the integrity to stand up and give their honest opinion about how they feel.

Keep up the good work. HYB never sells out and keeps it real.

Amen! You are so right about this wil. We really need to continue to bring more attention to this. It really pisses you off when you think about it.

Damn right! If people listened to the underground (the real voice of the people), shit like this pile of…shit wouldn’t happen. I mean look at most bands that decide to go mainstream. You betray the underground you better watch your back. If anyone from Platinum Dunes has a problem with that, hit me up on the Forum. I’d be happy to give you my address so we can meet face to face. Nothing like slapping bitches in the face with my dick.

When the Halloween remake came out i realised almost every single classic horror movie i loved and have grown up with is about to be destroyed in the years to come. I couldn’t believe it when Jackie Earle Haley was cast as Freddy and i read some comments saying he is the perfect choice and could even be better than Robert Englund, it’s fact that no one in the world can play Freddy better, it’s like you starring in film and some one saying they could get an actor in and he could play it better than yourself could. Remakes like Friday the 13th aren’t that bad because they were always gonna stay with the hockey mask, but recasting freddy is like giving Jason a helmet. Plus the only names that are staying the same are Nancy and Freddy so far, all this is anal rape in my eyes.

  20. 20 DirrTy MaTT May 7th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Great rant Wil. I definetly won’t be seeing this one in the theatres, A Nightmare on Dawson’s creek seems really bland and uninspired. And no Englund? NO THANKS! Recasting Freddy is the equivalent to changing Mickey Mantle’s number, it’s like somebody other than James Earl Jones doing Darth Vader’s voice. To quote Bart Simpson, it’s a bunch of crappy crap crap crap. I would rather be anally double team raped by Mandingo and Lex Steele than have to sit thru another one of these remakes that are supposedly made for the fans by the fans. I’d rather drink the shitty diarhea ass of my grandmother after enchilada night than see this garbage. this is going to fucking suck, it’s going to sucking fuck. it’s going to suck shit. fuck bloody disgusting presenting advertisements as news, fuck platinum dunes for exploiting the classics….and fuck everyone that goes to see these shitty shit remakes.

    P-Dunes…..EAT MY FUC!
