Brain Hammer approved horror dvds hitting stores 02/17/09:

THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN (special edition): Lionsgate

A photographer named Leon (Bradley Cooper) who is looking for his big break snoops around New York City trying to capture its ugly and violent essence. During his rounds Leon spies a menacing man named Mahogany (Vinnie Jones) and follows him into the subway to satisfy his curiosity about the hulking, silent aggressor. What Leon observes is Mahogany’s brutal calling card: stalking the passengers, viciously attacking them, and then hanging up the remains like sides of beef.

Lionsgate gave this superior Clive Barker adaptation the raw deal (it played in about three theaters for a week) and now attempts to cash in with a special edition unrated dvd of Ryuhei Kitamura’s director’s cut. Fans of the brutal and the bizarre should enjoy riding this train.

QUARANTINE (special edition): Sony Pictures

When a news crew decides to trail a fire fighting team, they never suspect that the first call for help they respond to that night may be their last. Now they’re trapped in an apartment complex sealed off by the government. With no way of escape, they find themselves surrounded by residents who are infected with a deadly virus. What happens next is only known because of the horrific footage they left behind.

Based on the Spanish chiller [REC], Quarantine is an effective piece of scare machinery that derives most of its terror by viewing the action from the perspective of a cameraman covering a routine emergency call that quickly turns into a nightmare. If you can forgive this flick for being a remake that gives away the ending in both the commercials and the cover art of the dvd (???) you just might like it.
