There was a rumor floating around that X-Files 3 would be going straight to DVD. I didn’t even know they had plans for a third film, however, on Biglight.com’s Blog (the people who made X-Files: I Want to Believe) there is a post about why there should be a third film (read below). Some websites are reporting that the site denied the straight to DVD rumors but I couldn’t find it. I also have no idea who wrote this but it just sounds like some hardcore fan’s wishful thinking, instead of anything official The mystery may never be solved…
Frank already knows all of this but I know that everyone else is worried that there wont be an XF3 – but I am certain that there will be and here is why:
1. The studio has already made a profit and with it still in theaters around the world that number will continue to go up. Once you factor in the DVD release, I will bet that they will make a higher profit from IWTB than off of any other $30 million movie they have made recently. When you compare it in those terms to other smaller budget films, it is a huge success. FOX wins.
2. The marketing potential for a 2012 release of a big budget alien action movie with a built in audience is incredible. The studio gets back what it puts into this franchise. I think the budget for FTF was double that of IWTB and it grossed $180 million worldwide. If they give Frank and Chris the resources, XF3 will deliver. Also, December 21, 2012 is Friday! They release the film ON THAT DAY with an intense marketing campaign that starts well before release. This is the potential apocalypse we’re talking about – you want anticipation, you got it! They get the huge Christmas audience as well. FOX wins again.
3. The third film will bring back anyone that feels jaded either by the last few seasons of the show or IWTB (clearly these people have some part of their soul missing as well as a large chunk of their brain – but that’s not the point here). The plot of XF3 will give them the impression of getting some questions finally answered as well as return to what most people who don’t care to think too hard see as being the foundation of the show – aliens. Not to mention, and I’m sure Frank won’t comment on it – but XF3 HAS TO include William. He will be 11 then and not including him would be like not including Skinner in IWTB. It just doesn’t work. All 10 times I saw IWTB in the theater Skinner got the biggest applause line of all. Imagine a lanky 11-year-old boy with red hair popping up? People will go back again and again to see that play out. FOX still winning.
My final piece of evidence – Chris, Frank, David, and Gillian: DON’T GIVE UP. Chris was signing merchandise with that phrase for a while to tease us all, but I believe – rather, I want to believe – that it was also about how much they love these characters as well as understand how much they mean to all of us. They won’t give up. They will do whatever it takes to give them back to us again and I don’t doubt them for a second.
Thank you, Frank, for never giving up. Thank you for trusting that we will always be out there doing whatever we can to keep these characters alive. If you need us to march on 20th Century Fox’s studio to show them that we aren’t going anywhere – we will be there. You bet there’s hope.
