RetarDead (2008) DVD Review

With such a funny and offensive title like RetarDead, How did Rick Popko manage to make such an un-funny and non-offensive film? The sequel to Monsturd, RetarDead is not without any smirks or chuckles, every time they mentioned the “poop monster” I giggled like a 14-year-old girl. But leftover jokes from its predecessor doesn’t make a good follow-up.

Instead of the politically un-correct zombie film you are expecting, RetarDead is more of your run-of-the-mill walking dead flick. It features more than one scene of intestine eating, plenty of exploding head shots, but not enough of the mentally challenged as the title suggests. You may be above making fun of slow people, but then I guess you would pass on watching film such as this. For those of you who wipe their ass with PC protocol and like a good “tard” joke you may be left a bit disappointed.

The first half of Retardead sees the always drunk Butte police department tracking down the new town menace, “The Weenie Wacker.” Meanwhile while their attention is diverted, the evil Dr. Stern returns to work on his knew secret formula, making his test subjects the patients at the Butte County Institute of Special Education. It seems about ten minutes are focused on the handicapped before the switch to normal zombie mode begins.

Here is another part where Popko seems to drop the ball. The RetarDead DVD comes with a music soundtrack and features a catchy theme song, but it seems to be missing during the zombie outburst. If you are not going to give me a retarded zombie outbreak, then at least give me a memorable music montage to make up for it. The RetarDead theme song playing over scenes of zombies devouring civilians would have made this movie something to remember; however it just made you want to watch a Romero film instead.

As a low budget zombie flick RetarDead is not bad. The special effects are fun, gory and plentiful, and there is also a hilarious Troma type exploding helicopter scene. The acting is of course wonderfully bad, and the one-liners and jokes are even worse. The lack of nudity does not help and I sure hope Popko did not pay for the lame appearance by the Living Dead Girls (A local dance troupe who dress up like zombies) as it added nothing to the film. If Poultrygeist is the political zombie movie to not miss in 2008, RetarDead is the not-so-un-political zombie movie to avoid.
