Insanitarium (2008) DVD Review

Ok, so Jesse Metcalfe (Desperate Housewives, the original Miguel from Passions) plays this guy who wants to help his sister who’s in an asylum. I guess he’s never heard of hiring a lawyer so he takes the stupid route and goes about this by getting himself commited, via cutting himself up & acting crazy in public. (For the record: If you walk into a looney bin drunk and punch anyone in the lobby, that works too. Once commited you will also become eligible to recieve SSI benefits.). I don’t know why he thought he’d be of more use to his sister on the inside than the out but whatever, it’d be a boring Lifetime drama if he was was rational.

Anyway.. it doesn’t take long for him/us to realise something’s not right in the nut-house though; mostly due to the violent patients having ice-blue eyes.. and also because they keep trying to kill the staff.

Turns out the head doctor has been testing some new drug on the patients along with only-in-the-movies style shock treatment. The result is blood sucking, flesh eating psychopaths. To avoid becoming one of them he comes clean to the doc about his plan but makes the mistake of saying the one thing you never say to a shrink, “I’m not crazy”. Doing so moved him up on the list breifly til he learned to humor them. You always gotta humor shrinks. Anyway.. well shit starts happening, I’m not going to give a blow by blow recap of this movie, cause I’m getting drunk and starting to get lazy. If you care, watch it yourself.

There was some fun rape. Good gore, once it gets started. The film could have used some incest though. Can never go wrong with incest. It was also good to see Armin Shimerman (Buffy’s principal Schneider, Star Trek Deep Space Nine’s Quark) earning a paycheck again. Carla Gallo from that old HBO show Carnivàle is in this too, but doesn’t get naked. Still though, this isn’t by any means a great flick, but it’s pretty decent, much better than alot of the horror garbage released this year, so is worth checking out.
