Brain Hammer’s DVD PICKS for 04/22/08: Cloverfield - Scared to Death

Check out this week’s Brain Hammer approved horror dvd releases, hitting stores Tuesday 04/22/08.

BRITISH HORROR COLLECTION QUADRUPLE FEATURE (FRIGHTMARE, HOUSE OF WHIPCORD, THE FLESH AND BLOOD SHOW, DIE SCREAMING MARIANNE; 4-disc rerelease): Shriek Show/Media Blasters

The fine fiends at Shriek Show unleash this incredible British horror quadruple feature. This is an essential purchase. Here’s the films included:

Notorious director Pete Walker presents FRIGHTMARE. This 1975 cult classic is about suburban fortune teller Dorothy Yates. Yates is released after 18 years in an asylum, apparently cured of her cannibalistic urges. Yet her bloodlust proves to be too much to resist and it appears it may even be hereditary!

British exploitation horrormeister Pete Walker then combines his two shock in trade specialties sex and violence for HOUSE OF WHIPCORD. This is a sadistic portrait of a private prison used for the systematic degradation of loose women.

Next up from Pete Walker is THE FLESH AND BLOOD SHOW. A group of trendy young actors and actresses assemble at a run-down theatre at the end of a pier in an out of season British coastal resort. Hired by the mysterious Theatre Group 40 to put together an improvisation revue, the actors are soon at the mercy of a madman who begins working his way through their numbers.

The last film in this Pete Walker quadruple feature is DIE SCREAMING MARIANNE. Sexy Susan George pouts and peers from wounded eyes as Marianne, a go go dancing free spirit on the run from her lordly father and her psychotic half sister. Her father and sister both want to get their hands on Marianne’s inheritance and they’ll stop at nothing, even murder, to get it!

CLOVERFIELD (special edition): Paramount

Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal horrifying event of their lives. An internet phenomena, a box office smash, and now a best selling dvd release. Much like the monster it introduced, this flick is unstoppable. I enjoyed this flick immensely and look forward to seeing what surprises the dvd may have in store.

SCARED TO DEATH (1980; special edition): Retromedia

A cheap and tacky 80’s ALIEN rip off flick. An ex cop, now working as a hack novelist, is called out of retirement to help investigate a string of deaths that appear to be the work of a serial killer. The bizarre deaths are soon revealed to be the work of the Syngenor, a synthesized genetic organism! This flick is so scary, you just might shit your pants.
