I Am Legend Number One At Box Office

Never underestimate the power of Will Smith, his film I Am Legend (Read Review) killed at the box office pulling in an estimated $76.5 million beating out Alvin and the Chipmunks for this weekends number 1 spot. If the estimations stay true this will be the biggest opening for a genre film ever, not to mention the best opening in December ever.

This is once again bitter sweet for the horror genre, while it looks like we will go out with a bang this year, I Am Legend was a PG-13 film which is always bad news, because it makes studios want to force horror films to fit into a PG-13 type mold. Halloween ($58,269,151) proved that R-rated films can still be box office hits. Hopefully the upcoming Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem will do well (AVP grossed $80,282,231) showing Hollywood studios that they should stay out of the creative process and just let horror films fall where they fall. I am not against PG-13 horror films, just studio forced PG-13 horror films as in the case of I Am Legend.
