Final Destination 5: The “Final” Destination?

Final Destination Box Set

Warning: Spoilers!

I was preparing to do this week’s DVD releases when Final Destination 5 got me thinking… Is this truly the last Final Destination film? Should I buy it on DVD and complete my Final Destination collection, or wait for a box set?

The days of bulky box sets seem to be coming to an end, but I can’t imagine this must have franchise not receiving some kind of decent collection in the future. There is a $5 to $10 Final Destination 4 Pack and the The Final Destination Thrill-Ogy, but I’m looking for a box set with all the movies individually packaged, original art and multiple special features (even the dumb Thrill Ride Edition of part 3, where you can change the death scenes). I’m not sure if Final Destination will get The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection treatment, but I want to wait and make sure before I buy them all on DVD or Blu-ray individually. The big question is how long should I wait in case there is a sixth film?

The franchise seemed to be coming to an end with the lackluster The Final Destination, but a $27 million opening weekend, and a total world wide gross of $186 showed that the franchise still had legs. New Line cleverly skirted the fourth film being the last entry in the series by making the fifth a prequel, but fatigue finally set in and Final Destination 5 fizzled with an $18 million opening in the U.S.. However, it went on to gross almost $160 million world wide, not including DVD and Blu-ray sales. Like the Resident Evil franchise, the Final Destination films aren’t blowing up U.S. box offices any longer, but they’re making a killing over seas. Which could mean we will eventually see a sixth film.

New Line (or Warner Bros.) probably learned their lesson about releasing the sequels so close together (2009 and 2011), but that doesn’t mean they won’t dust off the franchise in a few years from now. Buying a DVD is like changing traffic lanes, as soon as you make the commitment the studio will release a better collector’s edition. Any horror collector knows that at some point you have to make the leap and hope you don’t get screwed.

I say it’s the perfect time to release a proper Final Destination box set. Even if there are plans for a sixth film, I would be happy with a five film collection. So until then I will skip the 5th film and hope for the best! If you’ve already collected the films individually, Final Destination 5 is available on DVD and Blu-ray, so you can finally complete your collection starting today!

I do believe there will be a sixth so some reason I think they can’t stop. Now Nightmare on Elm Street I can watch those movies over and over again and love them the same. Final Destination I believe the first was the best and always will be. I don’t see any hope for more topping it. I haven’t even seen number five yet but I guess I should to actually know if there will be a number 6. My co-workers at DISH Love the Final Destination series and told me I should just rent number five with my Blockbuster Movie Pass so I can see for myself. I love that I don’t have to go to the theaters to watch these movies because with the Blockbuster Movie Pass I get to get new release 28 days sooner than anywhere else and I get to stream on demands while I wait. It is really the best. I highly recommend it! I hope that I’m not disappointed by the Final Destination 5, cross your fingers!
