Ahhhh… it’s never a dull moment in the South. Especially if you’re not from around them there parts. I remember the first time I heard a woman at the grocery checkout counter in Tennessee as I was buying me a cold beverage. I was 16. She was 18, I think. Dreamy. Gorgeous. Twinkle Twinkle. And then she said three unforgettable words in the most amusing tone of voice I ever did hear, sorta like me scratching a Culture Club record backwards quickly: “Pape-er o Plas-dick?” My blue eyes bulged out, giggled like a girl and ran out of the store. She kept the change too on my sodie pop.

So what’s this got to do with a comic book you ask, as you read my fond memory of the Southern twang? Well, for starters, it’s called Alien Pig Farm 3000, and it takes place in Kentucky. Yeah so? Yeah, so it also has a man named Johnny Ray, whom is in love with his sister, runs moonshine with his brother Elvis, across county line, and says the word “Cain’t” about twenty times. So, yeah, let’s make that totally clear here: This is a comic book with aliens and rednecks in it. And it’s damn funny too!

Todd Farmer, collaborating with story masterminds, Thomas Jane and Steve Niles, writes a perfect pitch for a late night Saturday drive-in feature. His writing is not only spot-on with the Southern-speak, but pulls out some one-liners that would make Freddy Krueger blush. “You moron. You big glob of panty discharge!” It’s a classic, and it’s going in my book of “last call, ladies” lines. Farmer really keeps the pace going as well, amping up the humor and action at full throttle with some gory bits and pieces thrown in here and there. (That poor vacuum cleaner salesman!) It’s top-notch writing for something that just wants to be popcorn fare. (Alien-Mystery-Pig-Science-Farm-Theater-3000?) Anyhoo, I’m really glad I read all four issues at once, but damn if I don’t I crave more. Or is it do? I want more dagnammit!

Don Marquez. The artist. This guy is the man, I tell you. Not only was the art complimenting to Farmer’s humor and alien atmosphere, but it was a joy to see Cindy’s jugs be covered up by something most of the time when she was nude. I’m not one to really get a boner over that sort of thing, but it does kind of make me want to see her topless now, drawn by either Marquez or awesome cover artist, Mark Shultz. It was definitely a fun gimmick with Cindy’s melons, and Marquez did a great job overall in maintaining that humor with a wink. Marquez and Farmer must have had a blast making this comic book.

So for all you folks out there that need some Southern hospitality along with some aliens and incest, then grab the entire Alien Pig Farm 3000 series today. A fun romp without the moonshine!
