‘Live Fast, Die Young…and Leave a Flesh-Eating Corpse’
Razorback Records
- Review By Shane
Usually a review of an album does not start with a praise of the cover art but I’m going to do as such anyway. And I’ll give you three reasons why.
1. My Dad rebuilt hotrods when I was a kid, as a result the family went to a lot of car shows. At an early age I was exposed to Ed Roth beatnik styled artwork and became a fan of it, and this cover art is in that style, although that ain’t Rat Fink on the cover, its the fucking Turkey Monster!
2. Drive-In Theaters! The majority of films I saw as a kid was at a drive-in. I had beyond cool parents, and around the late 70′s and early to mid 80′s I saw many films at the drive-in which left a huge impression on me. Most noteably “Evil Dead” when I was around 8 or 9. That goddamned film on that fucking big screen I still remember to this day. It scared the hell out of me! I seen tons of movies at an early age at the drive-in and they are fond memories. I can remember me and my younger brother being so excited about going, being in the back of my dads pickup, with the audio from the speakers surrounding us, the giant screen, the trip to the snack bar to load up on hotdogs, frozen malts, and candy. I remember looking behind us to the other screen to see what was happening and perhaps to catch a titty shot. I especially remember the promo cartoons and shorts they would play to let you how much time was left until showtime as well as promoting the snack bar…I can still see the images and hear the audio in my head! I miss those days of being a kid, the atmosphere of the drive-in cinema is lost today. Believe it or not the drive-in we attended the most so many years ago is still operating today, back then it was called the Landmark Twin drive-in, today its called the Starlite Drive-in Theatre, check it out at starlitefun.com.
3. Ed Repka. Yeah, he is the legend that created this cover art and if you don’t know who he is, stop reading this review right now. Maniac Neil is a genious as well as a god in my book. He fronts FRIGHTMARE and if you seen my recent review ( Here ) of that bands latest album on this site you’ll know that ‘Bringing Back the Bloodshed’ is fucking beyond cool in my book. On the advice of Razorback main man Billy N. I ordered the new album from Neil’s other band BLOODFREAK. It’s entitled ‘Live Fast, Die Young…and Leave a Flesh-Eating Corpse’ and is a monsterous 23 track thrash attack of ripping gore metal. Neil, the fuckin’ maniac, performed every instrument on this album! It’s a brain masticating kind of thrash like that of Frightmare obviously, but features more condensed shorter songs. Catchy riff after riff after riff after riff slam away along with the varied demonic possessed regurgitated vocal attack of Neil…stunning!
“Goretits” stands out with its mid-tempo dirge, as well as “Shriek of the Mutilated” with a lava flow of melody and evil atmosphere. “The Nameless Stench of Forgotten Celluloid” is pure doom with an even more accentuated scary vocal style mixed with a slow tempo. Like I said, many tasty riffs and as well as a few surprises abound. Killer! Musically mostly FAST fucking thrashgore but always catchy and brain eating is this album! Lyrically (written wonderfully by Billy Noc…uhh, I mean Grossera), this collection of numbers celebrate cult horror/gore films in every aspect, from the video rental stores as well as the drive in/independent theaters that featured them back in the day. The songs also introduce you to characters/locations/vehicles such as the afformentioned Turkey Monster, The Screamatorium Drive-in, The Butchermobile, Doctor Bitch, Worm Face, Mucouspewing Lungslasher, etc. The lyrics are wonderful, I read through them, before even listening to the album, in the 16 page booklet. I’ll close this review with a snippet of the lyrics from “Toxic Tomb”…’there’s a place at the bottom of hell/a dungeon of horrors that I know very well/horror dvd worshipping freaks/and so many more/reclusive mutants who crave vio-lence and the obscure/they show films that are rare and have never been seen/sinful material that will make you tear out your spleen/one sample of this stuff would make others feel weak/but you’re brave, insane, and you listen to BLOODFREAK”.
