These are two sample reviews from the book. They may or may not appear in the final edition.
MOTHERS DAY (Dir. Charles Kaufman/ Writer. Charles Kaufman and Warren Leight) Starring: Nancy Hendrickson, Deborah Luce, Tiana Pierce, Holden McGuire, Billy Ray McQuade, Rose Ross
I have to admit I love this movie. This is one of the films that started my obsession with horror movies and for that I hold it dear to my heart. As a young tyke I had accidentally seen the end of Mothers Day while my older sisters and Aunt were watching it one weekend and it never left my mind. Causing me to spend a lot of my teenage life searching for it and let me tell you finding it did was not easy because I didnt even know the title of the film I was looking for. All I knew was the name of a certain character in a certain scene. The name was a simple one, Queeny, who I eventually learned was the sister of the sweet old murdering mother Ma in Mothers Day. To say the least it was a search well rewarded and a search that introduced me to a new twisted family. A family who should go down in the horror hall of fame with the likes of the more notorious families from Texas Chainsaw, American Gothic and The Hills Have Eyes, all whom were a big part of my childhood and a huge part of horror history.
The story is about three former college roommates who plan a reunion in Mas woods and are taken hostage by her two backwoods sons Ike and Abby. Tied up in the familys dirty and dilapidated house two of The Rat Pack (what the girls call themselves) are forced to watch as their friend is rapped and beaten during two of the boys training exercises called the Park Bench and the Shirley Temple. To make matters even more fucked up fragile old Mom sits by barking orders with a mega phone making sure her boys are doing it right. Eventually their friend dies and during one of my 1980s Most Touching Horror Movie Moments nominees she is laid to rest and her friends vow, to do the fighting back for her. After escaping, dressing their wounds and collecting a bag of makeshift weapons the remaining Rat Pack return to the house sporting some 80s bandannas (which is always a sure indication that they are ready to kick some ass) and dish out some of the best revenge since I Spit on Your Grave.
Mothers Day may have a low body count but includes enough depravity like rape, murder, nudity (male and female), and revenge to make it one of the more twisted films of the 80s but that also doesnt mean its just another mindless exploitation film that only relies on gore and cheap thrills. It also features a critical look at consumerism and the socially economical differences between Mas family and her victims. Watching Mother hysterically trying to teach her sons how to be cultured and citified by watching TV and using the products advertised makes for one demented interpretation of what society is all about. Even their house filled and cluttered by pop culture merchandise is a consumerist nightmare gone horribly wrong. Mothers Day is defiantly an important film of the 1980s and the horror genre as a whole. With its relentless brutality, dark humor and shock value it defiantly helped usher in a new era for the horror film. It is a must see for everyone who considers themselves a true fan! Even if its just to see the best and probably only death with a pair of plastic boobs ever shot on film.
Saturn 3 (Dir. Stanley Donen/ W. Martin Amis) Starring: Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett, Harvey Keitel)
The only reason Saturn 3 is included in this book is because of one truly horrifying moment when you see Kirk Douglass naked ass while he is wrestling with Harvey Keitel. Other than that this is mostly a straight up Sci-Fi movie with very little if no horror type elements about a killer robot on one of Saturns moons. Sometime in the future I guess the citizens of Earth have colonized space. Douglas and Fawcett live alone on a moon base located on Saturn 3 where they are supposed to be working on producing food for citizens of the colonies or something like that. For whatever reason (which seems to be that that are always having sex instead of working) they are way behind in production so Earth decides to send Keitel to evaluate their operation and help them get back up to speed. The only problem is Keitel fails his mental exam and is not fit to go which brings us to the start of our movie.
Keitel winds up brutally killing the person sent to replace him, in what is the first and only really cool death scene of the movie, then proceeds to sneak his way onto the shuttle headed for Saturn 3. When he arrives he is welcomed and made at home by Farrah and Kirk who of course have no idea what is going on. Harvey Keitel does an excellent job as the unstable captain; making everyone uncomfortable right off the bat from the drugs he takes called Blues. to his creepy attempts at having sex with Farrah by telling her Nice body! May I use it? After he is promptly turned down and finishes checking the place out, The Captain turns his attentions to building a newer more efficient robot to replace the old ones. The only problem is he has to download his mind into its robotic brain to program it. If you cant do the math I will do it for you. Crazy Captain + Robot Brain = Killer Robot. You should be able to figure out the rest of the movie from here. Keitel and crazy robot chase Fawcett and Douglas and tries to kill them.
Things blow up and somebody loses a hand but thats about it. Although at about the 18:30 mark on the DVD, if you have a good slow button and zoom you may be able to see one of Farahs boobs when Kirk tosses her a bathrobe. Im not too sure but it may be something to check out. With that said I dont really know the general consensus about Saturn 3 it could be a huge Sci-Fi classic. Its basically one of those big budgeted movies directed by Stanley Donen (Singin in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) back in the days when real actors still appeared in genre films. The sets look like something out of Lost in Space (TV Show not crappy movie), a lot of neon lights and oversized computers and Im sure there is some kind of message about the evils of mankind or something like that. Like I said this might be some kind of Sci-Fi classic but for the stricter horror fan probably a complete waste of time.
