After Derek’s friends are murdered by a talking werewolf, he begins to suspect his stepdad, Mitch, of the crimes. With his friend Sam, Derek works to uncover the truth, while protecting his mother at the same time.
I have a werewolf fetish, so I was excited to get this one. It was marketed as the werewolf representing the id personality trait with the werewolf being sexually aggressive as well as murderous. This peaked my interest, but while there were a couple sexy scenes, there was nothing really sleazy about the film. As a matter of fact, I would almost describe it as a Lifetime drama…only with a werewolf. And this is a good thing!
The opening and closing of the film feature fast action, gore, werewolf one-liners, naked breasts, and werewolf rape. But a large portion of the film is devoted to watching Derek and his would-be girlfriend Sam try to expose the truth about violent and mentally abusive stepdad Mitch. And this may sound boring, but I rather liked the talky parts better than the action filled sequences. It played as a well constructed family drama with tension between Derek and Mitch, who tries to assume the role of his father after he was killed. Derek’s mom is also a key factor as Derek tries to protect her.
The characters, stereotypical or not, were believable and I liked some of them. I especially liked Derek’s mom who is trapped in an unloving relationship to a man that treats her and her son terribly. I am pleasantly surprised how well written the female characters were. I felt particularly bad for the girl that is forced to do kink with her boyfriend when he calls their lovemaking “vanilla fucking.” And the usual “sluts always die” rule of horror films was turned on its head when the virgin is assaulted and the boyfriend that never gets the poonany winds up with his frank ‘n beans detached.
The best part of the movie is when young Sam pretends to like Mitch to get his hair for a DNA sample. Instead he forces her to stay in a compromising position, thus obtaining the DNA sample by other means and further complicating a potential relationship with Derek.
The soundtrack is rockin’ with great metal and even some good rap music (believe it or not). The film quality was excellent and theater-worthy. The gore effects were top notch, but not as much as I would have liked. The werewolf reminds me of one from THE HOWLING series, but I have heard many complaints about the transformation sequence. You do get a few nude scenes, but one is incredibly depressing.
The film is provided by Screen Media Films with an R rating at 96min. No word from the director when asked if we would see an unrated version (with more werewolf rape, sex, and nudity) in the future. Was it something I said?
DVD Extras: “Creating the Wolf” Documentary, a Music Video, and Commentary with the director where he states that the virgin rape scene represents Little Red Riding Hood.
Favorite Quote: Bimbo, “I really like your tongue ring. Do guys like it when you…” Sam, “Why don’t I blow your boyfriend and you can find out?”
Bottom Line: Pretty entertaining update on the werewolf mythos mixed with sex, one-liners, and love.
Rating: 8/10
