BUMP – Issue #1
Fangoria Comics
Written and Drawn by Mark Kidwell
Review by Mike Fish

“Well it’s about time.” There. That’s my quote. Easy, but none the truer. If there ever was a company that should have a line of horror comic books out there in your Doritos-smelling comic shop, it’s Fangoria. The respected monster book filled with blood, guts, babes, and everything you wanted to know about upcoming horror movies has finally opened the doors to the funny books. Yes folks, the empty chair at the end of the dinner table has finally been seated.

And what a great debut it is. Soon to be a film by horror effects legend, Robert Kurtzman, Bump hits the pavement running and doesn’t stop. Not the most terrifying title for a book with so much gore and violence, but it’s fitting to the ghost subplot as things definitely do go “bump” in the night towards the end. What really grabbed me was the two man army that created the eye-catching art and story. Mark Kidwell not only channels his inner Dean Koontz in the storytelling, but also some Dale Keown in his artwork. It’s a special thing to be getting the story and art from the same person because you get what’s inside that sick skull of theirs, but what’s truly special here is the quality. It’s top notch in a world where the rules of horror are pretty hard to follow while offering up something fresh and original. Kidwell appears to understand that the chips go stale if you don’t put them in another container and seal them up, so he seals his story good. Tupperware good. Kidwell understands he needs to step up in this situation, and most assuredly does.

The story revolves around a killer that likes to take his dates home to mama, but only to butcher up their naughty parts and turn them into some sort of Raggedy-Ann, wooden puppet monster. He’s not exactly good-looking either, that Edgar Dill, so it’s understandable that his need to kidnap and maim hot ladies is not entirely his fault. Mama, on the other hand, appears to be just fine with it. I guess she couldn’t afford “fat camp”, so decided, “Hey, if you wanna kill them, go ahead. Just be sure to make your bed when you’re done.” And that’s when the horror cliché gets thrown out the window. The police break the door down, and kill Edgar. Yeah! The freakin killer bites it pretty quick. They find his wooden doll collection of once hot cheerleaders, and decide the sick sumbitch needs to bleed to death. Wow. The law is more deranged then the killer. What a relief! From there, the book leads into more intrigue as time passes by, and the ghost of Edgar Dill reappears to those that took him out of reality. Mama, on the other hand, still makes his bed, even after telling him to do it. Come on! You know mama’s boys don’t make beds! (And yet, the book has nothing to do with this. My joke has run astray!)

For those like me that have been dying for a horror comic book from the one that rules them all, Fangoria, here’s your ride. Pick up Bump at your local comic shop starting this Wednesday, June 13 and stick your thumb out as you leave the store. I guarantee the dude at the register sticks his tongue out and tells you “Fango Rules”, and probably to “Rock On” or “Shout at the Devil” or something dated like that, but all you’ll need is the satisfaction that Fangoria Comics is finally here to give those nightmares a little blood, guts, babes, and slasher satisfaction.

GRADE: A- CONTINUE READING? Hell yeah! Great cliffhanger too!
