Hitting shelves today is Bram Stoker Award Nominated author, Gregory Lamberson’s new novel, The Frenzy Way. Leaving the oversaturated vampire and zombie genres in the dust, Lamberson delves into the world of Werewolves in an NYPD horror-thriller with the feel of an 80s splatter film.
After achieving unwanted fame for apprehending a serial killer, Captain Anthony Mace finds himself working on a new case with his homicide team that’s more grisly and horrifying than anything he’s seen before. As the murders continue, and an ensemble of characters begin to surface and bring new light to the story, all directions seem to point at the bloody words scrawled on the wall at the scene of each crime: all synonyms for Werewolf. Soon New York City is hurled into a panic by the murders and the media, and Mace is beginning to believe that the supernatural might be the only explanation.
The novel introduces the reader to a lot of characters, sometimes too many to follow, but most of them are very likable and relatable. Each character provides a new glimpse at the mythology, which is stimulating and immense enough to separate the werewolf history of The Frenzy Way from that of other stories about the same monster. Some of the most enjoyable parts of the novel are devoid of the heroes, and completely dedicated to the story’s villain.
And there is plenty of the things we horror fans really want, sex and gore! Lamberson does not pull punches when it comes to blood, mutilation, and massacre. At parts it’s extremely graphic, and at others, just suggestive enough to really get the imagination going. If you really get involved with the characters, which isn’t hard to do, there are times that you’ll be turned on, and times you’ll be nauseated.
You can sense Lamberson’s storytelling influences if you’re a fan of the genre. What’s even more fun is when he drops werewolf film titles and other hints at horror movie magic directly into the story through the detective’s research. A treat for horror fans, some parts may be lost on the casual reader. Despite the story being a little bit bumpy at times, The Frenzy Way is a fast-paced, fun read for gorehounds and horror fanatics.
