AfterDark Films just picked up North American rights to the action horror movie THE TRIBE, which finished filming in Costa Rica. Let’s see if you can guess the movie. THE TRIBE centers on a group of stranded vacationers on an island (TURISTAS) filled with mutated cannibals (THE HILL HAVE EYES) with the lead female birthing a mutant offspring (INSEMINOID). But the kicker is that the film “deals with a woman’s struggle with the need for masculine presence. The lead character gives birth to the divine masculine within herself and becomes complete and able on her own” according to GoreZone magazine. A film telling women that the only way they can be a complete person is to have a masculine presence and make babies? Oh boy.
The film stars Jewel Staite (SERENITY), Justin Baldoni (SPRING BREAK SHARK ATTACK), Kellan Lutz (PROM NIGHT remake), and Nikki Griffin (DUKES OF HAZZARD). The Alpha Creature (I am assuming this means he has a big wang to help in his baby making endeavors) is played by Terry Notary who has been a “movement coach” to the stars in films like SUPERMAN RETURNS and X-MEN 2.
The Art Director is Jaime Fernandez who worked previously on Mario Bava’s HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON with the Special Effects provided by Barney Burman (HOUSE, THE OFFSPRING) and Matt Kutcher (MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN).
The film has had comparisons to THE DESCENT (among all of the ones I already pointed out) and is seen as “a great female-driven survival adventure movie.” So either gear up for another thrilling ride or a spasm inducing eye roll as it is coming in 2008.
