THE THIRD MOTHER (previously titled MOTHER OF TEARS) from the Dario Argento “Mothers” trilogy is one of the most anticipated horror releases this year. It stars Asia Argento (Dario’s daughter) as Sarah with appearances by Jennifer Harper (SUSPIRA) and Udo Kier as an exorcist. Elisa is played by Daria Nicolodi, the director’s ex-lower/ frequent collaborator and Asia’s mother.
According to Asia’s fansite OdetoAzia, “In the first two installments of the “Witches Trilogy,” Dario Argento told the stories of two “Mothers”: Mater Suspiriorum in Freiburg (SUSPIRIA) and Mater Tenebrarum in New York (INFERNO). In “The Third Mother,” the focus is on another Mother–Mater Lacrimarum–the only survivor of the trio. This witch has been ‘sleeping’ in Rome for centuries and is awakened by Sarah Mandy, a young American student from the Ancient Art Museum.”
The complete, and overly detailed, synopsis has finally been released. But Horror Yearbook believes in summing things up quickly because we have stuff to do. Basically, all the witches from around the world converge to pay their respect to the most powerful of the 3 Mothers. Sarah, Mario (who is searching for his missing son), and an exorcist must fight alone with no help from the police. Um and this apparently includes murderous monkeys, suicides, zombies, babies for dinner, human torches, earthquakes, and an avalanche of corpses.
Oh and Asia Argento’s character is reportedly going to have her eyes forced open by a painful device. Sounds like fun, but apparently the violence will be heavily cut by Medusa to get an ‘R’ rating. No fear kiddies. Wait for the DVD and I’m sure it will not disappoint. Theatrical release is slated for 10/31/2007.
