SF Indie Fest: More Genre Films

The nice people at SF Indie Fest pointed out to me a few more genre films that are appearing at this years festival in San Francisco. The festival starts on Feb. 8th with David Lynch’s new film INLAND EMPIRE then finishes on Feb. 18th with Fido. Others that appear are:

Neighborhood Watch: Roxie Cinema Feb. 9th 11:45pm - Victoria Theater Feb. 17th 9:30pm

(Descriptions taken from the SF Indie Fest festival guide.)

Bob and Wendi are starting a new life, away from the crime and violence of the big city. What more could a young couple want than a spacious company home on peaceful Wormwood Drive? The community quickly opens it’s arms to new arrivals, and Adrien Trumbull, the guy across the street, drops in to welcome them with a box of chocolates and a few kind words. They gatefully accept his neighborly hospitality, blissfully unaware that behind Ardrien’s warm grin (and his front door) lurk perversity, madness and miasma. Never take candy from neighbors.

S&MAN Roxie Cinema Feb. 10th 11:45pm - Victoria Theater Feb. 18th 9:30pm

S&MAN, directed by J.T. Petty, explores the relation between voyeurism and horror films, utilizing a wide array of sources to shed light on the psychological underpinnings of the genre as well as what the desire to be horrified says about certain aspects of society. Centrally concerned with voyeurism, the film delves into related issues such as objectivity/subjectivity and audience sympathy.

The documentary features interviews with filmmakers and film scholars who specialize in horror, offering various perspectives on the genre as well as the voyeuristic nature of film itself. In addition to these interviews, the documentary explores the case of a peeping tom who was caught obsessively taking footage of his neighbors. By exploring a real case of illegal voyeurism, the film further investigates the need to watch that motivates so much of the horror genre, and just where it comes from

Unholy Women (Kowai Onna) California Theater Feb. 12th 9:30pm - Roxie Cinema Feb. 14th 9:30pm & Feb. 17th 11:45pm

Three stories by three directors. Each tells a horrific tale of a woman, who for some reason or another, becomes very very scary. From Japan.
